I've spent far too long trying to find a definitive answer, and am more confused now than when I started...  I had a lumpectomy in February with a sentinel node biopsy.  Do I need to have my blood pressure taken on the unaffected side?  Answers on the net range from No Risk to Use the other arm.  Thanks.

  • Hi,I had therapeutic mammoplasty and full lymph node removal, on my left side  , I was told to have blood s and blood pressure on the opposite side

    Hope this helps

  • I had a full lymph node removal and was told always the other side.  If you’ve had something done both sides I believe they advise using the side with the lowest number of nodes removed but after my cannula slipped during surgery in my good arm I came round with the blood pressure monitor on my leg….

  • I've been told uneffected side.....when I had had surgery on both sides they took my blood pressure around my leg

    • Best regards x
  • I had a double mastectomy and sentinel node biopsy right side. Lots of conflicting info regarding this. My surgeon said that I was ok to have blood and bp on any side. I would contact your breast care nurse and do what your team recommends as it does seem to vary. My treatment room nurse gave my flu and covid vacs in the hips because she didn’t want to use my arms! Although my surgery was only in September

Since left side mastectomy in Feb this year I don’t have anything done in left arm, no bloods, no cannula, no infusions, no blood pressure, no flu jab, COVID jab etc. I make sure I tell them before they start, to avoid that side.

  • I do the same, , even now (nearing 5 years post left mx) only had sentinel nodes removed but don’t want any risks.

  • I had L mastectomy, R lumpectomy and bilateral axillary clearance. BP on the leg is 20 points higher than the arm, so is inaccurate. When in Hosp for bowel cancer surgery I had no option . Had BP and drips in arms. Fortunately I had no problems with this. Since then I always ask them to put drips/cannulae in my hand veins, thinking that any swelling might just stay in the hand. I did have a horrible incident when a phlebotomist left the band around my arm after taking the blood. I did not notice as I had a short sleeved blouse covering it. Wondered why it was aching. Had huge bruising and swelling, but wore my sleeves and was OK. I mad an official complaint! Xx

Onwards and flatwards (don't do hills) and keep walking if you can!

Oh good grief seaspirit44! My heart goes out to you! What you’ve been through pails into insignificance compared to some of us. Wishing you the very best xxx

  • I'm so sorry to hear of your trials; you've certainly been through the wringer!  I hope you got an apology from the phlebotomist.

  • Hi Kitty

where on your leg? Calf or thigh, or maybe ankle?

im going to have mastectomy with full node clearance left, but have a PICC line in my right upper arm
