What are the booster or bonus sessions about ? When do you get offered them and does anybody take them

Oncology not yet mentioned this to me, just my 15 sessions ?? Not sure if I would or would not.

Thanks

  • Hello   not everyone needs or gets offered booster radiotherapy sessions, your oncologist will decide if they are appropriate for you based on the type of tumour you have and other factors. In my case I had 5 whole breast radiotherapy sessions followed by 5 booster sessions  - I wasn't going to disagree with the oncologist and refuse to have them as I wanted to have all of the treatment that was being recommended/ offered as being appropriate for me. You should have a meeting with a medical oncologist prior to your radiotherapy starting and they will let you know the number/type of radiotherapy sessions that they feel is appropriate for you. Have you already had this meeting and they haven't suggested that you need a booster? If in doubt about your treatment plan have a chat with your nurse as everyone's treatment plans are tailored specifically to them. Hope your radiotherapy and the rest of your treatment goes well x

  • Thank you. Yes I had the session and she never suggested anything about them beyond my 15.  I will ask when I have my planning session whenever that is.  It's just the waitung game again

  • i got 5 days whole breast and 5 days booster. For me it was because my tumour was near my lymph nodes in the centre of my chest and they can't remove those ones so a boost to the area is needed.

It was no different than the normal sessions other than a different position.

  • Hi

Boost sessions are dependant on your age and the grade of tumour you have. They are intended to give an extra localised  dose to the tumour bed after the whole breast / chest wall has been treated. Not everyone needs the boost and it will be your oncologist who decides if you need to have one.

    Take care

  • Hi Why,  I am just on my booster week and they zap the tumour bed, apparently, which is quicker than the other sessions.  I was told this was belts and braces to ensure that all cells around the site were well and truly eradicated.  Fingers crossed this is the case. x
