Hi, I am due to have a mastectomy on the 4th of October. I was just wondering whether anyone who has been through this experience could share any thoughts on whether to wear a bra or not after surgery?
Hi MissMolly, I haven't worn a bra at all since my mastectomy without reconstruction 3 weeks ago. My skin is very very sensitive and I can't tolerate any sort of bra. Fortunately I'm only 32AA so can easily go braless. I did buy some post surgery bras and feel I wasted my money!

I had a single mastectomy and no reconstruction so same as you. I didn’t bother with a bra for a while for a while - I am34GG and wore M&S secret support camis (they do a larger cup size as well) for ages - you can pop a comfi/softie foam thing in the other side under the support to even things up and it was good enough to go out and about - it’s not as if you’re going to be doing a lot of exercise for a while. I did buy a post surgery front fastening bra and that was good when I got more active - again from M&S. I think I could have done without this stage as I did really well with all the exercises and despite having a full axillary clearance I could manage a back fastening quite quickly. But it was very soft and comfortable on the scar area. After 10 weeks I got a weighted prosthesis which looks better and a more normal bra with a back fastening (it’s not wired but has a thick band under the cups - it does rub a little at the end of a long day ) and a pocket for the prosthesis but as I’m now mid-chemo I don’t really care that much as I’m so tired - but I am looking to go to a specialist bra place when I’ve recovered and see if that works better/looks more natural/ gives me a bit more confidence as reconstruction won’t be for at least another year for me - if I decide to go ahead with it. Hope this advice helps - I did iM&S as could order easily online and they had big cup sizes - ASDA also do prettier ones in two packs but not in my size. I hope it goes well for you. I wouldn’t worry too much about a bra looking back on things.
