Hi I had a mastectomy & lymph node clearance 3 weeks ago. Pain is becoming worst in the chest area going round to my side & burning sensation in arm pit area. Wandering how long to expect these symptoms. Thx sue x

Hi sue I'm only 1 week post op but I should imagine if you have a burning sensation it's worth getting it checked out just to be on safe side x wendy

  • Hi Sue,

I'm having that done next week  sorry you are in so much pain, I would definitely get back in touch and explain to them that the pain is getting worse, so they can check you over, hope u get it sorted asap.

  • Hi Scoobs, I had a mastectomy and sentinel node removal 3 weeks ago too. I'm in quite a lot of pain. Someone on a US site described it as sunburn being rubbed with sandpaper.  Yep, thats it for me. I think its nerves etc 'complaining ' and hopefully healing but its no joke! Are you taking painkillers? Hope we both get some let up soon xx

  • Hi, if you’ve been medically checked out and they say you’re progressing well, and are healed, then think seriously about gentle massage. Some of your nerve endings have been cut in the op and need to be taught that they are just that and to find a way of stopping being irritated! I worked as an OT and sometimes with amputees and they can get similar problems, phantom pain. Massages are advised for that too. Nerves grow very slowly, I’ve still got numb areas even now and my mx was in 2018.

    Hope all goes well

  • Thank you hopefully it will ease off soon. Hope your recovery is going well x

  • Thank you, I think it’s not helping as I am not able to take meds for my arthritis. Sending you good vibes regarding your op & it all goes well x

  • Oh my goodness that describes the feeling exactly. I think as feeling returns slightly in more areas it’s becoming more uncomfortable. I’m taking co codamol but they are not effective for the nerves. I hope you do get relief soon x

  • Thank you I think it is definitely something to consider as it is going to take time to heal.glad all has gone well for you x

  •  Hi  Scoobs,

Are you feeling any better? I *think* I am . Still doing the exercises and can now lie on my 'good' side at night. My surgeon  looked amazed when I said I'd had quite a lot of pain...just said I was healing up OK.

Do you know what other treatment you'll be having? The tumour they removed from me ( not going to say my tumour!)was upgraded unfortunately to 3 and now it's been sent to  the USA for an Onco DX test to see if chemotherapy is indicated. More waiting.

I've had down days and a few better. I suppose its adjusting to a new normal?!

    Take care,

    P xx
