To shave again or not

Hello

I'm almost 12 weeks post chemo and when I had my wig fitting the woman who did it suggested that I should shave my head again once I start to get regrowth. I've now got some hair all over my head - although it's quite patchy it's getting there. I just wanted to see if anyone had been advised to shave once your hair has started to grow in again.

The wig fitter said that it's best to get rid of any hair that might have been affected by chemo - and that in the long run I'd have much better regrowth for buzzing the first crop off. But I'm understandably thrilled to even have hair again so don't know what to do!

Sorry if this seems trivial in the grand scheme of thing - I'm starting 20 rounds of radiation on Thursday so I think stressing about my hair is a distraction technique Face palm

Cheers

Lizzy

  • Hi

we all feel differently about our hair loss so all I can relate is what I did

I was “ lucky “ in that hair was stubborn and it was winter whilst I was on chemo so hairdresser kept it cut to scalp rather than shave . It was whispy but under beanie . Then after 5/6 I started some regrowth so decision was no.2 shave her idea being hair had shape to grown into .
For me it worked very well ( GI Jane look ) Joy  this was done in the Dec 2019 I went into shielding with a fuzz all over scalp then by July 2020 needed a trim to calm the chemo curls down .

As I say it worked for me I preferred the even look as oppose to patchy whisps ,but it is up to you and what you feel comfortable with .

good luck with rest of treatment my story on profile

One step at a time and ...Breathe !

  • Thanks so much for your reply Margaret. I think I might brave a no.2 to get the whisps gone and embrace the GI Jane look.

I'll check out your profile Blush

I have had a mastectomy and am starting chemo in 2 weeks time and have decided to have a Number 2 at my husbands barbers (and collect for charity at same time). I have also been told it might be advisable to have another no. 2 when chemo done and new growth starts…best wishes to all the bald/semi bald!Heart

  • I clipped my hair once about three months after chemo. Removed about 5-10mm of wispy hair but I still had plenty of thicker hair left underneath. Now I'm 8 months post-chemo and I haven't cut it since. It's about 9cm long now. So just that little trim to get rid of the wisps and I barely noticed that affecting my hair length cos it was still so short at the time.

Don't be afraid to trim it - it'll just keep growing! But no need to hurry either. I don't think you need to shave it close to your head to remove the chemo hair, you can wait till it's a bit longer and trim the ends.

    Good luck with the radiotherapy.

  • I don’t have any advice but just wanted to say that nothing about this whole process is trivial. I wish you all the best. Xx

    Agreed!

  • Thank you for all your responses. I think I'll just wait and if I get the urge to get the clippers out then I will but I can hold off until I actually want to.

Hope you all are doing well and thanks again for replying xx

  • I cold capped so my hair just got thinner. I got it cut short and had trims every 6 weeks once chemo stopped. I never shaved . I’m 8 months on and hair really thick and about 3 inches long

  • Hi BC Be Gone

I didn't do anything after chemo but let my hair do its thing. I rubbed caster oil into scalp occasionally. I now have hair past my shoulders and so grateful its back. No major issues, but it's personal choice.
