Medication for anxiety

I will have a mastectomy in the next few weeks. My head is spinning with everything. Some days I’m doing okay. I can ride the wages of sadness but I am really struggling with bouts of debilitating anxiety some days. I can function but I feel flooded with worry & like I am on the edge of a panic attack. I can sort of manage it but it can be hard to shift despite trying good strategies of distraction, talking to people etc. I would appreciate some mild medication to take the edge off from time to time. Has anyone tried anything that would tick this box?

  • Hi

Medication for anxiety can take a few weeks to kick in and initially can make you feel more anxious or depressed.

Your GP may be able to refer you for other therapies such as cbt but this might not be soon  enough.

If you have access to a Maggie's or similar  I believe they offer relaxation therapies too and you will find lots of support on this forum .

I had my surgery just under 3 weeks ago and  as a cancer newbie this site is unbeatable for help and advice.

I know it's a terribly anxious time but hopefully once you start your treatment and with the support of your medical team, family etc you will feel less anxious.

    Take care xx

  • Speak to your GP.  Some are more helpful than others in addressing mental health issues but it might be good to start a relationship with them now about your in case you need help going forward xx

  • Hi, I asked the doctor for something to help with anxiety at the beginning just to take the edge of the anxiety.    He prescribed Citalopram and I do think it helped me quite quickly , either that or I was getting my head around it all anyway.  I’m not sure but might be worth a try.  I don’t take it now as things got better once I had a treatment plan and especially after lumpectomy and I hope it’s the same for you xx
