Hi, my dear old mum had her first round of chemo on Monday. We are on day 2. She has had absolutely no side effects at all which has thrown us a bit as was expecting something. She’s 72. She has been prescribed anti sickness tablets if vomiting and was taking them initially but feels she should stop as doesn’t feel ill at all. I’ve read that people take them as a precaution anyway to keep symptoms as bay. Any advice on what we should to. We are fully anticipated her feeling poorly at some point but it’s been a bit weird with nothing. Last steriods were taken 2pm yesterday
thank you
Hi Lara77, so please your mum is doing well. I have found that the nausea gets a little worse as the steroids wear off and my worst nausea days are often 4/5/6/7 It has to be said there are wide reactions to chemo so it may be that nausea isn’t going to something your mum suffers with. Maybe try stopping them, you can always start again with them if she deteriorates? You may find also as the cycles wear on she gets increased nausea but there are many people who don’t! It really is so personal, best of luck x
I'm about to have cycle 4 on Monday, I too have been pretty surprised at how I've tolorated chemo so far . The first round I didn't take the anti nausea tabs and I kind of felt vagly hungover for about 5 days. Second and third cycle my nurse said just take the anti nausea tabs as a prophylactic and that's exactly what I did, I feel like I'm getting off lightly with side effects but I'm tolorating it well.
Good luck to your mum.
Hi, I felt fine for the first 3 days after each chemo but days 4 and 5 were tough. My advice would be to keep taking them a little longer, I wish I had done so in my first cycle. Most people find side effects quite predictable so next time she will have a better idea. Hope your mum continues to cope well
I was told to take them all exactly as prescribed. They are the reason the majority of people don't vomit any more - it is because they have managed to find something that works.
It is far harder to stop the vomiting once it has started. I was one of he unlucky 20% that still vomited even with taking the anti-sickness drugs exactly as prescribed, and I could not stop. It got steadily worse and I was eventually hospitalised and they had to give me an IV of anti-sickness medication before I stopped. After that, I got another even stronger ones to take on top of everything else each cycle - and I still felt nauseous for a week with EC.
If your mum is thinking of stopping, then call the BCN or oncologist to check with them first, They have fined tuned these drugs over many years to help patients get through chemo with fewer side effects than before.
