Hi, I was diagnosed with breast cancer on 16th June 2021, I had breast conserving surgery on 11th August, I also had a breast reduction for symmetry but I really cannot accept the way I look. I know that may sound selfish but I cannot look at myself. Will my breast shape change when things settle down?

  • Hi I was diagnosed on the same day as you and had a lumpectomy on 23th July and auxiliary clearance 30th September. I think from what some of the ladies on here have said, it takes a long time for breast tissue to settle down as it will be still bruised. I still have lump from the biopsy, it’s gotten smaller but hasn’t gone completely yet, so maybe in time your breast shape will get better.

    Sending hugs xx

  • I’ve been told it can take 6 months to a year for the breast to settle in its new shape. In the meantime if it helps you can buy breast shells or partial protheses which make your breasts look bigger and more shapely- I have a loved one who has worn them for years. If your not happy with your shape by next year you can sometimes get cosmetic repair on the NHS to improve the appearance.

  • I had surgery in February and it has taken a very long time to settle. The swelling lasted many months and all around the scar is only now beginning to soften, the scar itself is still hard. The worst of the numbness didn't last too long but I don't have full feeling on my skin where the scar is.

As others have said, breast tissue does not like to be disturbed and it can take many many months for it to heal within.

My oncologist thought about 6 months post-radiotherapy and I should have a rough idea of how things will be (radiotherapy disturbs everything again). I finished rads at end of April so I'm coming up for 6 months shortly. That feels about right in terms of how settled things are now.

I think it's because I've always been big busted that I have anxiety about my appearance. Thank you for your kind message.
