After having a mastectomy on my left breast, I’m just wondering about people thoughts on it who have had it done? I’m starting to think I don’t want to have it done. Thanks xx
Hi Lizamarie this is really unusual, I think you have just been unlucky, if you don't get an answer this time try re-listing with Masectomy and reconstruction in the title, OR reply to someone elses post on reconstruction and read the answers then you can message the people whose story might be like your journey. Good luck, love from Ann
Hi Lizamarie
I will be having a mastectomy in the new year, left breast. I also am undecided on whether to do reconstruction or not. To be honest I had got to the point last week where I just wanted to have the mastectomy without reconstruction, get it over and done with! I had a good chat with my breast surgeon and she explained all the options to me and I am now thinking reconstruction with implant but as I am likely to need radiotherapy and I will have an expander inserted and then reconstruction a bit later if I do go this way. Lots to think about and consider. I’m sorry that I can’t help you more as I am not there yet. I think it’s a very personal decision and for me getting the options and facts was really helpful. I hope that your surgeon or care team can help you with this snd I am sure that there are many here that can help with their experiences.
Take care xx
I absolutely want a reconstruction. Was advised I couldn't have it at mastectomy as would need radiotherapy which starts soon. Dislike my lopsided condition. keen for reconstruction but not keen on more surgery, if that makes sense. In fact dread more surgery. Found smx tough, although recovering well now. But the diep being considered is far more major and will take longer to recover. Very daunting. If I'd had a double mx I might have considered staying flat but the current look is too strange. ( in my opinion)... we all feel differently and that's fine. My plan is the diep but hope i will have the courage to go ahead when i get to that point. We shall see...
Hi I am due my mastectomy shortly but waiting to see about the reconstruction. I don’t want to be lopsided and think wearing a prosthesis might be stressful however, the operation is so much longer and recovery also longer. I spoke to my aunt who had a double mastectomy 25 years ago when she was in her 50s. She has a reconstruction but in them days they had to inflate the balloons. My uncle had to top her up ! She made me laugh. She did say however she now just wears the prosthetics but the main thing is to get rid of the cancer. I know how you are feeling it’s such a decision to make and there seems to be no right or wrong answer especially as I don’t know if I am having any further treatment. Good luck with everything and I am sure you’ll make the right decision . Take care xx
