I know they are all busy but mums had her mastectomy back in august. It’s post Op week 6+ Now. When we were 3 week post op We were told they are waiting for her2 results.
since last week I am ringing to ask to speak to the breast care nurse, however everytime I call either she is not in or not in the office. the admin leaves her a message with my number but I don’t get a call back either?

not too sure what to do? I also had a few questions regarding the healing of the mastectomy but obviously I can’t get through. Has anyone else had this issue?

  • had that recently. In the past when it happened I went to my GP about the issue And my GP phoned my oncologist and got put through.

  • Sorry to hear that you're having such a struggle to talk to someone Daizy03, although I read on here a while ago that  some areas are having lengthy waits for HER2 results due to lab problems. My breast care nurse gave me her mobile number & email address, plus the general contact number & email address for the nurse team so I didn't have too much trouble with contacting a nurse if I needed one, although certain days of the week were much busier than others (eg MDT days) so I tried to avoid calling then. If your nurse isn't available then any other breast care nurse will be able to answer your query about the healing so rather than keep leaving messages for your nurse maybe ask to speak to any nurse who is available? My breast clinic has a drop-in centre so that was useful when I had concerns about healing, infection etc as you could just turn up and get seen by a doctor, but not so good if your hospital breast clinic doesn't have that facility. Is the concern that there may be an infection? If so, your mum's GP will be able to take a look and advise.

With regards the wait for results, have you tried calling the consultant's secretary? I found I got more action with regards to appointments/results when I called them directly and bypassed admin. Everyone's busy and I found that being persistent was the only way to get a call back/action. Just a thought, but is your mum able to make the calls herself, in case a call from a daughter isn't considered as much as a 'priority' by the admin team than if the patient is calling?  Some on here have had results by contacting the hospital PALS team so that might be an option too if you haven't tried that yet.

  • I’m not too sure if the gp would be of any help, don’t have an oncologist either

  • Hi,

thank you. Normally In the hospital I work at the same happens as you mentioned, the nurse gives her number. But in this one they give a number of the office. The other bc nurses don’t really help, as once I did ask but they said they don’t work with that particular surgeon and every surgeon is different so they can’t say.

The only way to really get through to the bcn is to call. But obviously that does not happen.
I did try to call the secretary but it rings and rings and no one picks up. Just going round in circles really
