Return to work

I was signed off sick from my job as a nursery practitioner when I was diagnosed with breast cancer in november 2020. I have had chemo and surgery just over 4 weeks ago. My latest sick note runs out in 2 weeks time and my employers have talked about a phased return to work. They want me to tell them what that looks like to me.

What are your experiences of a phased return and any advice you might have to offer?

Thanks in advance,

Julie x

  • Hi Julie

I also work in a Nursery (school) and have spoken to them about a phased return. They actually said that they would go with how I feel ( I finish chemo 6th Aug) e.g  could be 2/3 mornings in the first week and maybe build up. I'm not sure if there is a set procedure for a phased return. It may be an idea to give your breast care nurse a ring as they will have expensive this.

    Take care xx

    Hi Julie

I work in school, I am usually working with reception aged children but cover teachers in other classes.  My working day was 7.30am until 5.30pm.

I have returned to work 5 days a week, but only working 9am until 3pm.  I also work with the slightly order children as my hours are covered in Early Years and if I felt I needed to go home then the ratios may not be covered.

I 'told' my Headteacher the hours that I wanted and that I was also a little reluctant to return to teaching just yet.  I had radiotherapy treatment only, I finished on a Friday and returned to work the following Monday.

I also popped in and spent the morning or afternoon with them and this helped me to gauge things.  One thing I would say is take it easy, as once you are back you are most certainly back!!!

    All the best xx
