Hi I'm starting chemo next week & I'm going to try the cold cap.
I was wondering if anybody could recommend any shampoos or scalp treatments that have helped with hair loss? I was looking at Watermans, Regaine, Paxman & Nioxine not sure if any helped anyone?
Hi Fhamilton, like Bustysusy says, use a mild shampoo, I have used Simple shampoo through chemo treatment and my hair is coming back, I have my last chemo session tomorrow, and my hair coming back has given me such a boost ... I also put moisturising lotion on my scalp as it can go dry .. good luck to you through chemo, just take one day at a time and rest when you need to xx
Out of darkness cometh light
I was quite fortunate because my unit included a regular visit from a beautician to advise on hair and nails.
She certainly advised a mild shampoo without strong perfumes and one which was preferably paraben free. Since 2016 most brands have become paraben free and reduced harsh chemicals. However, she did not recommend baby shampoo. Baby shampoo is mild but it also contains a substance that helps to strengthen and form the skin for new born babies. This was less suited to chemo stripped heads. Now I know lots of people on this thread do use baby shampoo and are happy with it but if you haven't yet bought shampoo, my advice would be choose a paraben free mild. For example Timotei make one called Pure which is not expensive.
She recommended rubbing almond oil or argan oil into the scalp at night from time to time covering head with cap to save the pillow.
I didn't cold cap and lost my hair very quickly after 14 days but it grew back and I had my first cut exactly one year after the day my OH shaved it.
For nails she recommended a clear, protective varnish which I started using on the first day of chemo....hands and feet. I can't recommend the brand because it has been discontinued but it certainly saved my nails. There must be others similar if you ask in a chemist.
I was also told to start using an alcohol free mouth wash twice a day from Day 1 , using it more frequently later if I felt any sensations. I did that too and I never had an ulcer or mouth sore. Coincidence.....maybe but certainly I would do it again in case it had helped.
I hope your chemo goes well. It will soon be over although it seems like eternity now.
Love Karen
Great advice I also start my chemo in 4 weeks so will plan ahead and get these products. Anyone know if it is OK to have facials or other treats to keep your spirits up ?
No reason not to treat yourself. Best treat is regular manicure and pedicure but NO shellac or gel. Also make sure the salon are aware you're having chemo. As lacomtekp said mouthwash is essential. Some units used to,offer complimentary treatments but covid put a stop to that. It does seem like an eternity now but but the end of the year it will be almost over
Hello, I've been using the cold cap & I've just had my 5th session out of 6. As said by the others, use a Paraben free shampoo & conditioner. I've been using the shampoo & separate conditioner from the Aussie range & found this has worked really well. My hair has thinned out as you still lose hair with the cold cap but I've still got alot left & wear it in a ponytail during the day. It's thinned out more above my ears where the cold cap doesn't reach but my hair covers this. Take a beanie hat to wear after the session as your hair will still be wet. I've got a wig & headscarf as a backup but haven't needed to use this. The first 15 mins of the cold cap aren't easy but if you can distract your mind with a magazine, you'll get through it & it is worth continuing with if you can. Wishing you lots of luck with your treatment xx
Thanks so much everyone I'm a single mum & have tried to explain things to my little boy about me being sick needing to go to hospital & that I will loose my hair but he's getting very upset about it which is making me more upset so I really want to keep trying to act & look as normal as possible to try & make things abit easier x
Thankyou great to hear it is possible to keep your hair il definitely try that shampoo
