My oncologist has advised me to have 6 monthly infusions of Zoledronic Acid to help prevent breast cancer returning in my bones.

I am worried about the more severe side effects and am considering not going ahead with this.

I would be glad to hear from anyone who has had this treatment.

Thanks

  • I had exactly the same thoughts yesterday but hadn't realised they wanted to give it to me to help prevent recurrence. I thought they were giving it to me to strengthen my bones and I didn't think I needed it. Now I know it is to help prevent recurrence, I'm all for it. The severe side effects are rare. I need to get a dental check up and bloods before my first one but I'm now happy to go ahead. I've been through chemo, operation and now rads. I'd be interested to hear what others say about the treatment though.

  • Hi  my story on profile just click on name to read diagnosis an treatment plan .
It will be 2 years in June since diagnosis .
My fourth zoledronic infusion is due in May . Mild SE of a bit fluey and achey for couple of days .
This next one will be first without chemo or Herceptin so it maybe that she was from rest of treatment given on same day .
Had dental check and advise was keep six weeks either side of infusion clear of dental treatment.
I personally feel as I am Her2pos Its all belts and braces to stop reoccurrence .
Discuss with your onco about risk factors but try not to google it’s usually out of date .
    take care

Good evening, I was first diagnosed with breast cancer in 2018,  Ductal carcinoma , a few lumps where found ,  as it is standard to test  2  lymph nodes during operation, which came back cancerous. Two operations later  and more lymph nodes removed. I suffer from lymphoedema, where my arm swells with fluid after, chemo and radiation therapy was completed. Then the Zometa transfusions, every 6 month's for 3 years. I have had 4 transfusions. Bed for two days after. A few aches, then feeling great. Any thing that will prevent the cancer from spreading or coming back is worth it, a couple of days in bed.

Hi I have had 3 zolendronic acid infusions.  I can honestly say I have had no side effects at all.  I took the paracetamol the first time as advised but I was fine.  I may be lucky but I'd really give it a try and it protects your bones.  Good luck

  • Hi

I’ve had 2 of my 6 six monthly Zoledronic acid infusions. I won’t lie, the first time did make me fell quite rough for 24/36 hours- shivers, feeling flu-like and very sore muscles/ joint- but paracetamol and ibuprofen really helped. The second time I was just stiffer for a few days, didn’t feel I’ll at all.

my view is if it reduces the risk of reoccurrence then it’s only once every 6 months and worth iteven if I felt like the first time every time!

    best of luck x

  • I have had 5 infusions - never had any side effects!
