Hello all you wonderful people - I'm going to use the most useless phrase in the 'book'!  I can't cope.  I most can when I have to use the Filgrastim for five days after chemo, the pain is so awful and I guess I didn't realise that all the medication builds up.  I am not someone who usually sits still but I have hardly got off the sofa this week. I cam't walk because my legs are so painful - I'm losing a nail and a half - I have second attack of oral thrush with little red blisters over my tongue and OK, I admit it I'm so fed up.

Thanks for reading if you have and I know I will be well in the end but right now .............

  • Sorry to read this. Chemo is really tough, but as someone that has come through it, it does end! And then you start to feel better. I liked to think that if I was feeling that bad, then the cancer must be feeling worse. How far through are you and which drug are you on? I had EC then Docetaxel. EC wasn't too bad but I found docetaxel really tough - so much so that they reduced my dosage after the first one. I barely moved from the bed or sofa for 10 full days with the first dose and I am an active person that was able to continue jogging (not far!) during the 2nd half of the cycle for EC. I found paracetamol helped with the Docetaxel pain, which I was surprised by as it was pretty bad. It feels like forever when you're in the middle of it, but suddenly it's over and you're on the road to recovery. If you're suffering with side effects like thrush, then call your BCN and they can give you something for it - or your GP. Don't feel you have to suffer all the SE without help. You can do this.

Have you asked your Dr about the antihistamine Loratadine....it is known to help the bone pain you get with the injections, please find out , there is a thread about it on here somewhere, or call Macmillan help line . Best wishes. X

  • Awwww, the Filgrastim pain CAN be helped, start a daily antihistamine called Claritin (generic name as its lots cheaper, is Loratidine) the day before you start the jabs and continue daily till finished. Take paracetamol regularly while doing that too.....

so sorry you’re going through all this though.

    sending hugs xxx

  • Also if you phone the chemo suite they can suggest a medicated alcohol free mouthwash.  I had one and developed an ulcer when I missed a day!

There was something called Evonail I used and my nails were fine.  I had dark nail polish on my toes when I had my first EC and only took it off a couple of weeks in, to discover they were turning yellow! I used Evonail  on them after that.  They don't make it anymore sadly, but I did find it here: https://www.turban.net/evonail.html

Some people have  used Polybalm, but I don't know if it's as good,  and it's expensive.

Did you look at the chemo thread,  as they have lots of tips at  the  start of the thread.  X
