Chemo tinnitus to deafness?

I have triple negative breast cancer. I started on Carboplatin and Paclitaxel and I’ve switched now to three doses of FEC 3 weeks apart. The signs of tumour reduction are very positive - the cancer has not spread any further even though the tumour was both aggressive and large (8cm).

Since starting FEC, I developed tinnitus. Like birds singing together in a tree in my head, but now I am partially deaf. I have no hearing in my right ear anyway due to a fractured skull at the age of 18 months, but now the hearing in my left ear is muffled, as if I’m underwater or I have my finger in my ear. Has anyone else had this? I have a chronic headache that goes with it, and pain in my neck where I’d expect glands to be. My eyes are tired.

has anyone had this experience? And if so, did your hearing return?

  • Hi Caroline,

I had pink and blurry eyes on EC (FEC without the F) which is apparently common.  I also had Paclitaxel,  and they may have weakened my eyes as 3 months after starting letrozole I had a retinal  detachment, followed bt an ulcer in my other eye q few months later.

I wasn't aware if tinnitis from chemo,  but I think I may have had it faintly and briefly just after stopping. I had covid last December and after active infection developed more obvious tinnitis (one of my long covid symptoms). In February I had my first Pfizer covid vaccine and thr tinnitis had been much worse from a couple of weeks after the  vaccine. I have  a permanent hiding and ticking in my head which gives me a headache sometimes.  Based on the  timing it seems like am auto immune response gone wrong,  and I wonder if that's thr case for you too? Could you try taking antihistamines tablets like loratadine (generic claratyn) add it's type 1 which are anti inflammatory?

You need to talk to your oncologist about it af well and ask for further tests to be done though,  as tinnitis can be caused by a number of causes including vascular.  Good luck and fingers crossed it gets better s it's really annoying!
