After a mastectomy on the left side,  I started taking letrozole,  I'm suffering  with a really bad smell under BOTH arms. I'm not sure if it's due to the letrozole or the operation.  Can any one help me ?

  • Hi Jammer,

I had this after my mastectomy too (only on my affected side though.) Thought I was going mad, until I shoved my armpit in my husband’s face and he agreed haha!
I wasn’t on letrozole or any other medication so I know it was from the surgery.
Im very relieved to tell you that it only lasted for a couple of weeks, and now I find there’s now no scent, sweat or hair there at all!

Hope you have the same experience as me and it passes soon xx

  • It's been  10 month for me now  and no change, the breast nurse said maybe the cancer drug as it changes hormones. But it's such a horrible smell, I fear I will not want to go anywhere. Fear if embarrassment.

  • Oh I’m sorry to hear it’s been 10 months and my experience isn’t the same in your case. Have you spoke to your gp about medicated deodorant? That was my next plan, had it not passed. Sorry I can’t be more help, I empathise as I too was very embarrassed xx

  • I've not had a mastectomy (lumpectomy for me with Anastrozole tablets) and I know a lot of ladies don't like using some antiperspirants however, I can recommend Perspirex.   I've been using it for years.  I don't use the strong version - just the original.  I used to suffer from excessive underarm sweat and would often take 2 showers a day, only wear natural cotton tops etc.  When I discovered this, it really made such a difference - no damp patches on shirts and I can wear any types of fabric now.

It's a deodorant that you apply overnight and shower it off in the morning and not applied every night - I do Mon, Weds, Friday nights.  Initially you might find that it itches, (when I initially tried the stronger one, it made me itch, so I bought the 'original' and it's fine).

I've read on all the cancer sites that deodorant with alcohol doesn't cause cancer, but I do know that a lot of people are concerned about using them. In June it'll be 4 years post diagnosis for me.

    Hope this helps,
    Lesley x
