hello, so I’m bang in the middle. Neither pre or post. Wondering what drugs people have been given .. anastrozole, letrozole for post menopause or tamoxifen for pre?

  • Hi

I was (am? Who knows??) in the same boat re menopause, last period March 2019 then chemo August 2019.  I was given letrozole which I am fine with (for now - side effects are manufacturer dependant with me).

The ladies on the 'oestrogen reducing medications' discussion thread may know more about the whole range of types and the whys & wherefores...

  • Hi

For me , I had chemo which stopped my periods - I was 51- and was expected to go on one of the AI’s, however my FSH count kept bobbing up and down, so went onto Tamoxifen. Three years later I was still not fully menopausal so have stayed on Tamoxifen, now been on 4 years with the expectation to go on Letrozole in about a years time. In a years time if I am still not menopausal I will have either my ovaries removed or zoladex to shut them off, my oncologist has said that 5years on each medication (Tamoxifen then letrozole) is the best for me, but I do think each specialist has their own ideas on the best time to switch.

My understanding is that Tamoxifen is suitable for anyone, but the AI’s are only effective if you are properly post-menopausal?

    Hi

I was 51 at diagnosis still having periods so most likely hormone treatment Tamoxifen, I had a full discussion with Oncologist as I’ve previously had pre-cancerous cells removed from cervix and was concerned that Tamoxifen can increase chances of gynae cancers, we therefore agreed to shut my ovaries down with Zoladex and start Letrozole, so see how things go
