Feeling the guilt of having chemotherapy on the day of my son's 18th birthday. I've asked for as early an appointment as possible and my husband and kids are really supportive but it will take up the entire morning and then I'm usually tired afterwards. Of course we have some lovely gifts and food planned for him but bearing in mind he won't be able to see anyone outside of the house on his 18th birthday, What can I do to try and make it a little special? He says he's fine with it and understands but I just feel so guilty

  • Hi there,  I'm sure that he'll  understand, and to be honest there isn't a lot you/he can do in lockdown anyway.  Maybe a nice cake, special present and something promised for later in the year?

I had my mastectomy on the  day my youngest turned 16, promised to make it up when it was her 17th (lockdown 1!) and her 18th wil be in lockdown 3. We've now said that we'll do something in the summer. It's annoying as she caught covid from her  teacher during lockdown 2 ('schools are safe') and gave it to us all, so the  family no longer worry about catching it.

Her sister is 21 in 3 days but I can't get her present as it's a gold engraved ring  which she'll need to try on.  She's vegan,  so I've bought s really fancy healthy vegan cake, and she'll get presents later.

Good luck with chemo,  and don't feel guilty! X

Hi, I was in the same boat as you!  going through chemo last August on my sons 18th.   Luckily boys don't usually like a fuss, even though we as mothers feel guilty about it!   Maybe turn the living room into a Bar! lol. Play monopoly.   We can only deal with the situation as it is and live in the now.
