Welcome to the June BC Chemotherapy Discussion.
Looks like summer has finally arrived - All we need now are a few Swifts & Swallows.
This thread is for all of you good folks going through chemotherapy to browse through, ask questions, answer questions and be there for each other in a way only you all know how.
If you want to find this post quickly, you can hit the 'Save In My Favourites' button - See discussion tools box on the right >
If you need any extra tips, our Chemo Tips Page is something you may find very helpful, and if you find a tip which helped you just reply to share with others who are also going through chemo. One top tip, ask about parking at the hospital where you are being treated; for some Cancer patients parking is either free or heavily discounted - So it's worth asking about.
Macmillan produce this Healthy Eating booklet if you have any diet concerns MAC13612_Healthyeating.pdf
If you need to refer back a month here is a link to The May Discussion which will be being locked to replies soon.

Hi all, no infection thank goodness, but still got a course of antibiotics, allergy tabs and cream :-) x
I’m Day 14 from my 1st Chemo and today my hair has started to fall out. I know I was expecting it but I still feel upset seeing it in my hand! Does anyone know how long it takes to come out completely. My hair is/was shoulder length and so I might have to cut it. Hope everyone is doing okay X
Hi ,
I hope you are ok, my chemo been postponed till Friday so can’t comment on how quick the rest of your hair will fall out. I have shoulder length hair but shaving it short on Thursday night so after my 1st chemo it’s not as much as a shock but I’m assuming it’s still emotional how ever long/short your hair is.
Hugs

... my hair fell out about the same time. It does get quite painful if you leave it. My husband shaved mine to stop both the head ache and the mess. I had already bought some pretty turbans which I immediately wore. It was less of a shock for me too when I looked in the mirror until I got used to the change.
My advice to anyone who doesn't plan to cold cap is to buy some pretty turbans or scarves in advance of their first chemo. Several web sites deliver very quickly. Also consider bamboo caps which stay cool in summer or warm in the cold. I had three basic colours....pink, red and blue and bought very inexpensive headbands from Claire's accessories to decorate them that matched most of my clothes just like you would add earrings or a necklace. I have never had so many compliments from people I hardly knew who loved the matching looks. It was amazing for my morale in otherwise difficult circumstances.
I hope all goes well with your treatments. These months will seem an eternity but they will finish and you are now on the way to recovery. My own treatment was almost five years ago.
Take care and stay safe from the Covid19.
Love Karen
Hi Lacomtekp,
Hi Karen,
Thanks for commenting on your experience. I’m just going for the shave so I can get my head around the change. I’ve ordered a bandana but will look into the bamboo caps you suggest . I’ve got a nice wig from McMillan nurses so will keep that for my trip to hospital for my chemo.
Take care
Sandra

Thanks for the tips and Lacomtekp As it was coming out in handfuls I got my husband to cut it. He’ll never make a hairdresser lol It’s such a mess but I’ll wear the Headwear I’ve got and my wig is ordered. The top of my head is quite sore so the sooner it’s gone the better.
Good luck with your Chemo on Friday Sandra.
Thanks again Mags X
