I went to the GP after finding a lump on my breast, he referred me on the 2 week referral system and I was seen by a registrar the following day, a week later I had mammogram and ultrasound. The consultant who did the ultrasound said I just had a cyst, he drained it, told me I had nothing to worry about and I went on my merry way feeling amazingly relieved. The consultant has now called me two days later to say that having looked at the mammogram there is an unusual tissue mass underneath where the cyst was and that they have rearranged some other appointments to get me back in quickly for a spot compression mammogram and biopsy. I have this appointment next Tuesday. I feel like I’ve been hit in the gut, I was elated a couple of days ago to be told it was just a cyst and nothing to worry about. I know I shouldn’t be reading into him saying they are moving appointments to get me in quicker, but it’s hard not to.  Im now petrified. I can’t see anything on line about a link between cysts and tumours, is this just a coincidence. Anyone else had an experience like this?

thanks x

  • Hi , sorry you find yourself here, but hopefully you’ll find support and shared experiences, we even manage a few laughs here and there! Of course you’re feeling alarmed and in a panic, it’s frightening to think you might have something sinister lurking in your breast BUT try to remember, most breast lumps and bumps turn out NOT to be cancer.

In my own case I’ve been referred many times: ‘nodular’ breasts, duct ectasia, fibroadenoma, cysts.... finally drew the dreaded cancer card last year. Horrible, scary, grim etc but doable. Breast cancer is generally very treatable. And I’ve been back and forth from tests with them saying it’s ok, not ok, atypical cells, suspicious lump - mostly to end up with a harmless diagnosis even after a lumpectomy. Just not this recent time!

I’m hoping your  stay here is brief and that your lump joins the majority in being benign - and also remember they must be thorough and do all the tests necessary to establish for sure what the blighter is - but if it turns out otherwise then there’s lots of support here from all sorts of lovely people, you will not be alone.

Keep posting, no questions are silly, and let us know how your story unfolds. Try to stay off Dr Google.... Wishing you well, gentle hugs, HFxx
