It seems I'm a patient now!

But not a very patient one!

I've at least got a diagnosis, it's invasive ductal cancer grade 2, but still small, oestrogen receptive but looks as if I might get away with the lymph nodes....and maybe not too much treatment afterwards?

Complex plan, but to begin with, a sentinel node (plus another one or so) removal as day surgery, (a nuclear medicine visit first to get 'the jab' for them to trace) then a gap while that,  plus the HER result come back, then because of my previous surgeries for cysts and the fact one resulted in a massive haematoma, therefore scar tissue, I will have a complete mastectomy with an implant. That will be immediately after Easter.

By finding out as much as possible beforehand, the surgeon hopes to prevent too many operations. Obviously I will then need Tamoxifen or similar, so will appreciate helpful advice about that.

But I'd be interested on anyone's 'take' on her plan. I feel reassured that she took time with me, and the BC nurse afterwards spent a good while too.

  • We have fingers crossed here, they took a blood test both days and nobody has yet turned up with nebuliser/ECG/whatever, so maybe the Lokelma is doing its thing? He says that even though it’s chalky to drink, it’s nowhere near as bad as some of the chalky muddy stuff he’s had to down while being there!

And now we hope for an effective 3rd time lucky biopsy tomorrow! Oh, and decent diabetic control too!  It still got a bit too low early this morning for comfort, only rose enough after cereal, toast and marmalade.

  • And blood sugar is holding up ok after lunch; but then lunch is usually a decent meal, he had a roll and butter, roast turkey and trimmings plus cheese and biscuits!
remains to be seen what it does this evening.....

still no panic about any possible blood results so maybe the Lokelma meds are working ok.

Pleased hubs seems to be improving , It is all so complicated , one thing interfering with something else .....I hope you are getting rest and respite , you will need your energy when he gets home . So many medicines taste awful , I was given some last year that tasted of shoe polish , yuk

hope you are getting sunshine , it is cold , but good to see some brightness

    best wishes  me

  • Thanks , it is so strange that they can’t seem to get a biopsy. Really hope they do manage it tomorrow!

Horrid tasting meds, I remember some as a child, just made me throw up!

  • Sounding good re blood sugars on the whole. As they know he was used to a decent evening meal, you’d think they could give him something more substantial later too, even just an extra portion of cheese and biscuits to see him through? I can’t help thinking that you’ll manage it more effectively once he can get home. So here’s hoping for a ‘successful’ biopsy, quick results and maintaining his potassium and blood sugars, so that he can be released! I assume there will be a care package to help with his care at home?

I’d like to know how you know what shoe polish tastes like?? JoyJoy Love and hugs, HFxx

It smelled like shoe polish and tasted foul , I can’t really explain  x

  • . I understand your logic as the  smell of food affects our taste!  I say I hate coffee & tuna but I've never tried them just the smell turns my stomach!  When my daughter a toddler she loved tuna pasta or sandwich.  I'd open give her a spoon and leave the room returning to empty tin I'd put in dishwasher!!!!

  • I too understand exactly, smell is a very important part of taste!

Hubs has been asked to ask for an evening snack, since his system is used to a main meal in the evening, and last night it was rice crispies and biscuits. Hope they give him something a bit more substantial though! But at least his blood sugar levels held up enough so they didn’t totally panic this morning!

as for a care package, I think all we will need is probably pads for the bed at present, as he is still having the occasional accident, bless him, he feels so embarrassed by it but the potassium lowering meds have an effect on it too!

  • I  too wondered how knew what shoe polish tasted like - but I do know what you mean. I can't stand the smell of honey -it really turns my stomach - of course once my 2 children found that out guess what was their favourite sandwich filling !! I sat them at the protected table with a spoon and a spreading knife and they made their own - the joys of plastic tablecloths.
I hope they sort you out a care package before Hubby leaves hospital , take all that is offered you can always cancel it if it proves that you don't need it ! If your bathroom/ toilet is not very close a commode may prove to be a good standby. I hope that the urgency to need it will subside as his body gets used to the new medication, but it sounds as if it is keeping the K under control.

Wishing you a good ,restful night again tonight. Big hugs coming your way, Kwissy

  • I do understand really re the shoe polish taste! I remember having a liquid antibiotic for a quinsy which I said tasted like paint stripper - but I promise I have never tasted paint stripper! There’s such a strong connection between smell and taste - hence a friend of mine has not been able to taste anything for years, since she lost her sense of smell during an illness. And the old idea of holding your nose while you swallow something horrible.
Hope they do give hubs a good substantial snack so he can have a decent night , and that you sleep well too. HFxxx
