Today I did battle with GP surgery on my daughter's behalf. If you want an appointment - telephone or email only as you can only have F2F after this stage, you have to go on AskmyGP. Trouble is it opens at 7.30am and is usually closed by 8.30am as all request slots are full. My daughter starts work at 8.30am so had to get up early to shower etc. (she has OCD so showering lengthy and ritualistic). She couldn't get a slot it kept kicking her out and then closed!!
You can then ring at 11.30am to try to get afternoon. I rang as you usually on hold for ages and so daughter can't be hanging online. At 11.30am on the dot I got through. All afternoon slots gone too. Told to try again tomorrow. I explained it was urgent and GP had said to ring today to get more of the medication if needed. Just kept on "sorry all you can do is try online again tomorrow". I refused. Then she told me to ask Pharmacist to prescribe under minor ailment. Told I had started there a week ago but they couldn't prescribe this item could only sell to me and only in tiny tube and to contact GP. I also said that last week I had bought the tiny tube as guess what she couldn't get appointment last week and it was getting worse, rapidly. Daughter has a severe skin infection over a large area of her thighs (she washes excessively so her skin prone to getting dry and cracking. By the time she had an appointment with GP last Thursday she need oral antibiotics too so I wasn't going away today!! Then as if by magic she could open up tomorrow morning slots and my daughter will have call back. She literally just needs more of the cream as used up tube this morning but still signs of infection and told she must continue until it's completely gone. Surely she could have asked one of the 15 GP in the surgery today. I then went to see Pharmacist to say I was back buying another tiny tube as couldn't get GP appointment. She double checked if alternatives for her to prescribe under the minor ailment scheme but could only prescribe two separate creams. She told me to tell my daughter to ask for double size of last time as over a large area. Thankfully the cream is only £6 a tube but it's tiny. Maximum two applications over the area. I'd happily pay for bigger tube, despite the fact in Wales we get free prescriptions, to avoid the whole GP saga for appointments. It's really bad lately and then the GP tells you off for leaving it for too long to see them!! No alternatives as they have the monopoly with their two surgeries over a large area.
