Hi
This is a weird one, but I was told to avoid deodorant during radiotherapy and because I don't trust myself just to put it under one armpit, I've stopped using it altogether for the last two days. It is very hot here and I noticed when I took my tee-shirt off at the radio unit that I had one slightly smelly pit (the 'good' one). Is it possible that the removal of lymph nodes affects sweat production, or the smell associated with it? If not, has anyone else noticed this phenomenon? It's very bizarre, but if it continues I'll just have to concentrate really hard and use it under the left only for the next 6 weeks.
Thanks
Love Lizz
I'm so glad you posted this question
Since my node clearance i only sweat from the good side too,
I have found a good deodorant in boots called pitstop, completely natural with no parabens which works quite well, dont know if i'm being paranoid but i do seem to sweat more from my good pit, not had radiotherapy yet, still having chemo so i hope it settles before i doÂ

My sister had breast cancer 17 years ago and has never used deoderant on the side the lymph nodes were removed from since - she reckons she doesn't sweat at all on that side so you could be onto something there. Her theory is the surgery severed nerves to sweat glands that never repaired. Good luck with the rest of your radiotherapy.
Hi Lizz,
I haven't really noticed this but was recommended to use a natural deodorant by the radio therapist so I now use 'Salt of the Earth Classic' natural deodorant you can get this from Holland and Barrett it costs around ÂŁ6.00 bUt it lasts for ages in fact I Have been using it on both sides for 2 months now and it looks like it has hardly been used. I am so pleased with it I am trying to get the rest of my family to use it. I noticed you were looking for a cream to use during radiotherapy I was advised to use 100 per Aloe Vera gel. It worked for me and I had very little side effects - I did also use E45 once a day before going to bed. With regards to the Aloe Vera gel I took this to my app and used straight after treatment and then if I felt I needed to reapplied during the day. It felt great as it is a natural cooling agent.
Good luck.
Unfortunately I find if I do sweat that arm smells. I only had an SNB though. I don't know if perhaps fluids can't escape as well and come out as smell?! I do keep on top of if, don't worry!
I don't sweat from the side where I had the lymph nodes removed, and I don't have any armpit hair either.
Cheers

Actually it's coming up to 18 years! And yes, she is very well - fit, active and as you can imagine, a great support for me while I'm going through this, especially the chemotherapy. Â So let's look forward to lots of happy, half-unsweaty armpit years
Hi all,
Interesting question. Â I had a left breast mastectomy on 10 March and have now finished chemo. Â I start radiotherapy on 12 September. Â I haven't used deodorant since starting chemo but I did get a bit smelly, in the 'good' pit for a few days after surgery so I used Dove original then. Â I still don't get smelly on either side, love to know why but I'll enjoy it while I can!Â
Love and hugs
Hi
I was advised to.use "soft and gentle 0% aluminium spray deodorant during radioterapy as its the only one endorsed as safe doas not to interfere with radiotherapy. Â I hacrnt sweated much since my radiotherapy finished under my arms but used to have botox to stop it as it was so bad. You msy be on to something there!
