When I knew I was going to have to have a mastectomy I did attempt to find a surgeon with a good aesthetic record.
This wasn't me being vain by the way, I was told by my GP, the breast consultant, the BCNs, the regular plastics surgeon locally and the radiologist that I shouldn't worry about the horrific mastectomy scars inflicted on our grandmothers generation, things are very different nowadays, plastics and aesthetics and surgical techniques are very advanced now, there were many options.
I began researching.
It was really hard. There was such a lot of horror inspiring images. I'm actually not going to post the full response I was going to because it will frighten the life out of people.
However now I have a reasonable reconstruction I'm tempted to show what is possible and allow women to be a bit more proactive in their treatment options, once the cancer is treated and they are left to get on with their lives.
There are a lot of surgeons out there, some very, very good ones, up and down the country, and every single woman should have access to them.
Let's take an analogy of a wedding dress, I want to have a wedding dress made for me. I go to several meetings with wedding dress makers, I look at their designs and testimonials from previous work I then select the dress maker who I believe will make the best dress for me. I will then go to several measuring and fitting sessions before the dress is made. Once it's made I will go back for any small tweaks necessary. The dressmaker will at all times be committed to making sure I'm completely delighted with my dress.
Hands up anyone who had that level of service from their surgeon ?
If you did let's start listing our favourites, with region and specialism, if we can make one thing easier for people going through diagnosis it will be worth it. This is the sort of thing Macmillan should fund.

I'll happily contribute but not much use as I'm in Australia. I had a great breast surgeon here in Canberra - Dr Carolyn Cho. She only does breasts - cancer and reconstruction and associated work. I'd recommend her to anyone. So just in case there are any other Aussies looking in ...

Hi Carolyn,
my surgeon was fantastic. I was initially told (very coldly) that I'd definitely have to have a full mastectomy. Because I said I'd want reconstruction at the same time, I was referred to Nicola Laurence at the Royal Untied Hospital in Bath. She was great, practical but with an excellent approach. She said she could perform a partial mastectomy if I preferred and, although couldn't save the nipple, would at least leave me with some boob. She's done a fab job and was more attentive and careful (both before the op and after) than I could have expected if I'd been a private patient somewhere.
I can't recommend her highly enough
On another note, I've not had any problems so far with the radiotherapy and I'm using Aloe Propolis Creme which was recommended by a friend who used it all through her treatment and for about a year afterwards
Hope this helps x

Hi Carolyn - Carolyn28
In answer to your question, I'm happy to both recommend and share my surgeon/team.
I've had an amazing team at every step of the way.
I have been at Coventry and Warwickshire University Hospital, and their Arden Centre for the oncology side.
Oncologist - chemo and hormone treatment - Prof Chris Poole
Surgeon - Katerina McEvoy
Breast care nurse - diagnosis and surgical - Judith Clarke
Breast care nurse oncology - Julie Bull
Not met my radiotherapy consultant yet but I'm told she is lovely - Dr Hrouda.

Great plan Carolyn - Carolyn28
Might be worth adding oncologists and centres too - I've read so many reports of people not getting good breast care nurse support either.
The Arden Centre (the specialist cancer unit) is superb - lovely building and dedicated staff.
Both of my BC nurses are amazing and ring up every week - even when I'm with the other one! Also if I need them I always get a call back the same day - even had a call at 8pm one evening and I know they only work office hours.
My oncologist is also superb and a leader in the field - always happy to answer questions, and gives you as much time as you need.
My surgeon was so kind and empathetic and has done an amazing job - so happy with the results and her care and attention to detail.

Michael McKirdy is my breast surgeon. I usually see him at Inverclyde Royal, and he did my lumpectomy at Royal Alexandra, Paisley. Can't recommend him highly enough - my left boob actually looks better than it did pre-surgery, the scar is incredibly neat and, once I have a bra on, nobody would know that I had had surgery. And Susie Hazariko is the perfect BCN!

I had two surgeons - the first , Lisa Caldon did my lumpectomy and two cavity chest shaves , she did a fab job with them all. Sadly she didn't get the permanent job in Sheffield , and my mastectomy was done by Mr Haddad , who came from Barts in London - Â and I found him to be great too.Â
My sister-in-law has recently been diagnosed with breast cancer and her lumpectomy was done by Lisa Caldon , who got a permanent job in Rotherham - my sister in law absolutely loved her.

Miss Jane McNichols at Burnley General Hospital Lancashire did my excellent lumpectomy.
The scar is curved round the nipple and very neat. She was great and I can recommend her
My surgeon is Mr Daoud, not sure where he's based but I saw him at Frimley Park. VERY particular, the only smile I got out of him was when he surveyed his handiwork 2 weeks after the surgery. You wouldn't notice the scar if you didn't know it was there. I think he's about to retire though.
Oncologist is Dr Laing, based at Royal Surrey, but I see him at Frimley. He's happy to discuss things, unlike his current registrar....
Overall, very happy with treatment and interaction.

Mr Narrotam Thanvi my oncologist works for NHS But I saw him private patient at Princes Margaret Windsor and at The Spire Thames Valley, Wexham Slough. Â Kind, understanding and gentle man. Love him
Mr Maisam Fazel my breast surgeon and doctor for check ups etc, also at the two private hospitals plus he has London locations too. Â Lovely doctorÂ
