Hi All

Can I have some feedback please?

For the past couple of years since diagnosis of BC I have endeavoured to 'clean up my act' on lotions and potions.  I started using Bionsen once I found out about all the aluminium that goes into other deodorants.  I am now at the point that I sometimes have to put on Bionsen twice a day - my armpits become a bit stinky!

In the early days it wasn't like this and I 'think' this is as a result of getting rid of the aluminium, which is designed to clog the pores, being totally cleared from my armpits.  It's not critical I know and I can put on more Bionsen, but I would like to know if other ladies also experience this?  I've never been a stinky armpit person throughout my life but it is beginning to bother me a bit.

Look forward to hearing from you.

... still fighting this nasty little critter.....

Is it necessary to avoid deodorants when you are diagnosed with breast cancer?

  • Hi

If you take a look at this link, from Cancer Research UK you'll see that they state there is absolutely no connection with deodorants and cancer.

The lady who started this thread is no longer on the forum.  She was a trailblazer for finding alternative treatments to the usual "cut and burn" as she described it.  Sadly she  has passed away, but her diary is on this forum for people to read what she tried and the results of what she tried over the years.

I was diagnosed nearly 4 years ago and still use deodorant.  I am happy to run with what the experts say as to me, they've seen it millions of times and have far more experience than I!

  • I tried the non aluminium deodorants about a year before my BC diagnosis but found they didn’t work that well. Always a slight whiff after exercising! Since diagnosis I’ve been using the Moogoo cream deodorant (came as part of a pack that was a gift) and this does the job. Although I’m not exercising as vigorously at the moment, I’m still walking every day in between chemo and getting lots of chemo/steroid induced hot flushes/night sweats.

  • I switched to mineral stick natural deodorants and non-underwired bras 2 or 3 years before BC diagnosis. I just like things more natural, I used natural shampoos and conditioners too (paraben free etc) when I had hair and will be continuing their use once my hair is long enough to wash again. I also use natural cleaners around the house. I've done this for years and it made no difference to getting cancer, but I think it must be better for your health and skin anyway. My hair was certainly less dry with natural products.

As for smelling, I actually use a 'normal' deodorant in addition to the mineral stick if I'm going anywhere, just to be sure. I am completely smell-free working from home and even being active with running etc. But the type of sweat from stress at being in the office or going to appointments seems to be worse for smell. I figure that I use the 'normal' deodorant as little as possible so it's fine, and I always choose sensitive skin ones.
