  • Hi. I am wondering if anyone else has experienced ongoing breast pain after treatment. I had a pereolar lumpectomy five months ago followed by 5 sessions of radiotherapy.   My breast was sore after surgery, worse after radiotherapy.  Now it feels tender and sore all the time. Is this normal? Has anyone else experienced this?
  • Hi I had lumpectomy 4 July and was surprised that I had no pain for first 2 weeks but it became more tender as swelling went down.

9 radiotherapy beginning September and again no pain until now. I can’t say it’s sore more tender and uncomfortable like I’m aware of it all the time. Was told it’s healing process and nerves coming back together.
my friend still has this a year after surgery/radiotherapy.

i find it’s worse after wearing a bra, I must have bought 8 different ones but really None of them really comfy, much better when I don’t wear one

  • I think if you’ve had radiotherapy within the last 2 or 3 months then it can easily be an effect from that. I gather the effects can carry on for 12-18 months!!!! I guess that means treatment is continuing all that time?

But if you’re ever in doubt then do raise it with your BCN.

  • Thank you for sharing your experiences and I think it will be a good idea to check with the BCN . Might reassure me.

  • Over 2 years after lumpectomy & rads & still have pain  all over breast, which hurts to touch too. I'm constantly debating with myself whether to call up about it! I used to have periods of pain flare but much more constant now. I know some people do have long-term pain but not everyone by any means. Hopefully yours will settle.

  • Sorry to hear that you have had pain for so long . I know how difficult it is to cope with it and how worried you feel. I think as the others suggested it would be better to contact your BCN and get it checked out. Hope it improves soon for you.

  • Hi

Just to add to the other posts for timescales, it was a year after my radiotherapy when I picked up a shopping bag with my affected arm and realised for the first time that it didn't hurt.  I still have pain (8 years later) when I roll onto my front onto my breast, so it's not unusual.

    Kindest wishes, Lesley
