Bowel cancer returned

Hi all,

I had the bad news today that my bowel cancer has come back again in the same site the original cancer was last year seen on my recent CT scan and my last CEA blood level had gone up to 16.

I had an emergency right hemi colectomy for adenocarcinoma stage 3 last November followed by 4 sessions of adjunctive chemo. I am very disappointed to be told it is back and I need another operation at a specialist centre in Basingstoke, where the tumour will be removed and my abdominal cavity washed out with chemotherapy fluid.

I am really scared that this is it now, and I won't recover my health as I have done after the last operation.

I live on my own and not sure how I will cope going through all this.

If anyone has experience of this or any other advice you can give I would be grateful.

Best wishes

Lou

Hi Lou, yeah, first dose of new chemo yesterday and much fewer unpleasant after effects. It's aggravated my neuropathy but I'm assured this will only last a few days. So, overall happy bunny Blush

I hope that your experience is similar - let me know!

    Hi Lou,

    Hows it going?

I was discharged from hospital yesterday after six days in there with a blockage. I am now temporarily ok again, but I’ve lost weight, muscle tone and fitness. So I’ve got work to do.

I know I’m on the slippery slope but I’m gradually coming to terms with it. For myself I’m ok, but I haven’t got all my ducks in a row as far as my son and parents are concerned. I’ll get there.

I derive my strength from the support I get from all over. I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again - thank God for WhatsApp video calls.

Spring starts tomorrow, it’s been a beautiful day and I’ve had my first jab. Reasons to be cheerful.

    Gaul.

    Hi Gaul,

Oh very sorry to hear you have been in hospital, how horrible for you. I have also been in hospital recently. I ended up in A&E 2 Fridays ago now, I just couldn't eat or drink anything as the nausea was so bad and I was vomiting urgh. I am a lot better now, and eating and drinking well, I have my 3rd dose of chemo this Friday and then 1 more to go before a CT scan. Hopefully I'll be OK and there will be some shrinkage.

I hope you will be able to get some weight put back on. I am trying to eat healthily and making smoothies to drink.

I hope you will get on alright with your next chemo session. Sounds like you coped well with it.

Good to hear you had your first vaccine. I had mine last week and apart from being a bit tired I was fine.

    Take care of yourself

Hi Gaul, I hope you are doing OK? I have had my third dose of chemo on Friday. I am feeling OK this weekend but when the steroids and anti sickness pills wear off is usually a grim time for me for about a week. I am determined to make myself eat when I can. I hope you are able to eat a bit more now and your bowel is working a bit better.

I was at my allotment last weekend after going to get my picc line flushed and it was a lovely day. Things are springing up all over including the weeds! My friends over there had all clubbed together and bought me 2 lovely bunches of spring flowers, and one's wife made a beautiful card which they all signed, which was very nice of them. They have even offered to dig it over for me so that would be great.

Well take care of yourself and stay strong and try to eat small amts of what you fancy. I got my iron levels up by eating strong dark chocolate every day. Nicer than liver!

    Xxx

How are you getting on ? Have you started chemo ?

My mum’s oncologist at the time did not actually advocate surgery for her but we did seek out the surgical opinions and they did actually have an option , with risks off course , but it was worth hearing their views too .

Hope your doing ok . Two year old boys are absolutely awesome. I would love to be transported back in time for ten minutes with mine when they were two . Saying that I also love the young men they have become .

Hope you have a good plan in place and the remain cells are dealt with .

Thanks for thinking of me Court.

There's no way back for me but I'm OK with that, I've largely got my ducks in a row.

That's not the same as giving up. They're suspending my scheduled chemo tomorrow (phew) pending result of the scan I've got booked for early April. Hopefully they'll devise a cunning plan.

On a day to day basis I'm in little discomfort, I just wish I had some energy but I'm doing what I'm told to try to improve that.

Again, kind of you to ask.

    Gaul.
