Hi all,
Not been on for.a while, hope everyone is doing ok. just looking for some encouragement really. I've got Colon cancer which has spread to the liver. I have just done 5 sessions of Folfox and had a scan after the 4th. my oncologist said it's shrinking nicely in all areas but not enough for surgery. she is keeping me on Folfox for another 4 sessions and then another scan. She said it it still hasn't shrunk enough we will look at other options. I'm so glad it's shrinking but I'm terrified i won't get to surgery. trying so hard to stay positive but it's so hard when you think about the bigger picture.
Hi Star74
I hear you and completely understand but four cycles of chemo is actually not a lot at all when planning for surgery . They scanned my mum at six and had also planned on eight . You have shrinkage , fantastic it’s working and it’s taking you in the right direction . If you look on the American sites you will see they do significantly more chemo .
I don’t want to minimise what you are going through but the big positive is your responding to chemo . I think some oncologists like to check that clinically . From what I read there seems to be regional variations on how many cycles before checking . Some do the full eight and in the past 12 .
However the mental well being going through this process is tough . Everything hangs on the scans and it’s hard to process every hurdle that is thrown up .
My mum had a bit of a yo-yo back and forwards for two years before her liver was declared clear . But I see lots of positives still in the direction your going . My mum’s neighbour described it as sweating it out ! I think he was correct !
Hope you feel a little better soon . This is far from over .

Thank you Court, yes, you are quite right, it's moving in the right direction which is fantastic. My Oncologist has been great and told me she would scan early but it's likely I would need more sessions so she has managed my expectations. I have also been doing well with the side effects and know I am luckier than so many, just the enormity of it sometimes gets to me. but still, we go on, one day at a time. x
It is such a major life event you have every right to feel overwhelmed from time to time . I think the run up to these scans is tough in itself. But you are so correct you are actually handling all this incredibly well and it’s working .
Keep pressing forward hopefully they will shrink further .
Take care ,
Court
