I had a colonoscopy on Friday which showed approx 4cm tumour of my rectum. I received a letter a few days later to arrange an CT scan. This morning when I’m sure they would have received the results from the tumour biopsy I get an early morning phone call from the MRI department asking if I can go in ASAP for a MRI scan. Now I’m even more worried because they will have received the results and I’m thinking is it an aggressive cancer which is why they want me in ASAP? Every part of my body hurts, I’m convinced it’s spread and I’m not going to see another Christmas and my children grow up, I’m heartbroken.
Morning scared mummy , what a horrible start to your day . Have you actually had your CT scan yet ? The biopsy just confirms the cell type . It is the CT scan and MRI that gives a fuller image of where the cancer has surfaced . This is just part of the information gathering process to present to the MDT meeting and to determine the correct treatment pathway for you . There is absolutely nothing to evidence anything else at the moment . So you can relax a bit . The different types of images gives them a more complete view of the tumour location and gives the surgeon a feel for the best way forward .
Even in a stage 4 setting where cancer has spread there is still hope . 11 1/2 years for my mum.
You sound as though you need a good cup of tea and a hug . It’s a very frightening and scary process and a big system to navigate . Totally understandable to feel concerned . I am very glad you popped on and gave us the opportunity to assist you through this aspect . Too many people struggling away on their own .
Hope the rest of the day is better for you . There was probably just a cancellation and they are trying to maximise their capacity to keep essential work going through the system .
Take care ,

No I haven’t had my CT scan yet I go on Monday morning for that so I have the MRI Sunday afternoon followed by the CT scan. It was the words ASAP that the lady used on the phone that alarmed me. Plus my whole body is aching from my head to me knee joints so I’m convinced it’s spread everywhere. The worst part is I noticed blood in my stools almost a year ago with no other symptoms and stupidity assumed it was just piles so it’s all my fault for being ignorant but I’m certainly paying the price now.
Hi Scared_Mummy. It may be that they want you to have the MRI ASAP so they have the results from both scans through together in time to be discussed at the MDT? I had my CT scan first then had to go back for an MRI as something had shown up in my liver but it turned out to be a harmless lesion which many people have from birth and are never aware of unless they have a scan. I ignored my symptoms for a couple of years assuming it was due to a change in diet having taken voluntary redundancy from my job and enjoying a cup of tea in bed every morning which sent me rushing to the toilet.
Try not to escalate things in your mind -we’ll help you deal with the facts when all your results are back. Sending you a big hug.
Take care

Thank you for your reply.
I’ve just read your bio wow you’ve been through so much and come out the other end I can only pray for this for myself and be writing a similar bio x
I would imagine, what with Covid and whatnot that they called you because there was an opening and they didn't want to muck about.
Remember that with everything else going on, medical staff are operating (pardon the pun) in chaos at the moment so it may not be the usual route of letter, scan etc.
I've had a couple of scans last minute by telephone for jo.other reason than that they could fit me in.
Where I live the hospital has outsourced mobile MRI units and it's like a production line.
Hi, Scared_Mummy, I agree with the others, they obviously have a slot, it needs doing and it is less time for you to worry!! Then they will have their MDT meeting and treatment will progress from there. There is no reason, from the asap bit that it is super urgent. I turned up for my CT scan in the late afternoon, jokingly said they could leave the cannula in for the next mornings MRI (the cannula is not actually needed) and the nurse said wait here, went to have a word..... and they were ahead of themselves so they did the MRI there and then! So might be worth asking on the Sunday if they could do the CT after? Save travelling? They can only say no!.
Regardless, big (((hugs)))
