In a phone chat the surgeon gave me the 'down sides' of a bowel operation at my age (84). What are the 'up sides'? Would like an opinion from anyone in my age range who has had surgery and how they made the decision.

Hi
I don't have the experience you're looking for but noticed that your post hadn't had any replies yet. By replying to you it will 'bump' it back to the top of the discussion list where it'll be more easily seen.
Wishing you all the best with whatever decision you make.

Thanks, latch brook. Maybe we can keep in touch? It's a lonely time, and talking about an unexpected discovery like this is helpful. not sure I know how to use this site efficiently so don't hold back from advising me if I mess up with communicating through this site.
Hopeyou keep well, and happy 2021.
Leontes.
I agree that having a cancer diagnosis can make you feel lonely as well meaning friends can't fully understand how we feel unless they've been through it themselves. This is why this community is so good as you're surrounded by others who have a good understanding of what having a cancer diagnosis is like.
I can see that this is the second post that you've started in this group so you look like you're using it okay to me! You can also look through the other posts and respond to any by clicking on 'reply'.
When you have a minute, it would be really useful if you could pop something about your journey so far into your profile as it really helps others when answering or looking for someone with a similar diagnosis. It also means that you don't have to keep repeating yourself. To do this click on your username and then select 'Profile'. You can amend it at any time and if you're not sure what to write you can take a look at mine by clicking on my username.
If you have any difficulty navigating the community just drop me a reply and I'll be pleased to help.

You state that it's 'suspected, but unconfirmed.' I had the same diagnosis in April '19, following a colonoscopy, & I agreed to go ahead with a bowel resection a month later, based on that supposition. It could not be confirmed, as during the Colonoscopy they could not investigate it further...as they could not proceed beyond the 'mass.' I just went with their suspicions that it didn't look right. Turned out that they were right, as after the Op. the biopsies confirmed a 5cm cancerous tumour. Prior to that, my surgeon mentioned all the negatives of the Op, yet also the benefits of having it done.I think they explain that to everyone that is about to undergo a major operation, regardless of age. That initial consultation should not concern you unduly....It's normal practice for everyone. I was 70 yrs. when I had the Op. & was fearful that I was not fit enough to have it...But I was.....& if you go for it, you will have to have a Pre Op...which will determine whether your body can undertake it. The Positives/ Plus Side.....You get to fight the possibility of cancer & live a lot longer!
Wishing you all the best.
