Does all bowel cancer start with a polyp?

Had a colonoscopy today.  A giant pedunculated polyp was found (4cm) and biopsies taken.  I now have to wait 6 weeks for the results but have been advised it is likely to be cancer.  Did anyone's cancer journey start this way and if so would you care to share your journey with me?  Thanks.

  • That seems like a really long time to wait for biopsy results. However, if the Polyp turns out unfortunately to be cancerous, you are in some respect fortunate, in that it has been found so very early, & before it has developed into a cancerous tumour...which is how most bowel cancers are diagnosed. In other words, it would presumably be in the very early stages...& consequently, highly treatable.

    Wishing you the best

  • Dear Marianne,

Thank you so much for your kind response and good wishes.  I know I must concentrate on being positive and your words have helped xx

  • My journey started similar to yours. If you click on my name you'll be able to read my journey so far. I have had follow up scans that were clear and no sign of cancer I r spread and now I'm just waiting for my reversal, which will be done in Poole hospital.

  • Thank you for sharing your story Rita you sound like you have been through the mill but are hopefully coming out of the other side.  Very best of luck with the reversal.  May I ask, was the tumour in a polyp?

  • Hi I'm definitely through the worst of it thanks. As far as I'm aware the tumour was on it's own and they told me whilst still on the colonoscopy bed that she was pretty sure it was cancerous. It was 5cm.

I hope you're not waiting to long for your results.

  • Thanks again Rita.  Great news you are through the worst of it.  Very best wishes to you xx

  • Hi , I had a sigmoidoscopy last wed and a pedunculated polyp was found although smaller at 2cm . They wouldnt take a biopsy of mine but said I’d have to go back for a polypectmy and a full colonoscopy. ( initially a pet scan I had relating to another health problem showed a suspected sigmoid cancer ) The colorectal surgeon didn’t give me any indication so I’m thinking the worse because of the pet scan and I’ve no idea how long I’ll be waiting for it’s removal .I really hope you don’t have to wait 6 weeks for an answer

  • Hi Takayasu,  I have had the results.  The biopsies came back benign and although the Consultant has said I can be cautiously optimistic he will not know for sure until he removes the polyp and it goes for histogy.  So from being elated at the benign biopsies I am now worried again.  I have to go back on 20 January.  Anyone else had this?  Takayasu I send you my best wishes.  Take care x

  • Thank you - Hospital have called today I’m booked in on the 4th Jan for the procedure . I’m hoping I’m with it enough to take in what I’m told ( after the sigmoidoscopy my memory is a little faded)

    • That is good news Takayasu not too long to wait.  Best of luck and hope all goes well.  Let us know how you get on xx
