Turbt

Hi. Well my life took a sharp downturn last week when a couple of episodes of blood in my urine turned out to be a bladder tumour not bladder stones as I'd hoped.

Now I have to wait for a Turbt to remove it . My wife is already on my case about any delay but I am in the hands of the NHS .

Hoping this forum will help a lot.

  • Hi and welcome to the group although sorry it turned out like this for you. Firstly, be aware that bladder cancer can be treated successfully and many here have been through it. I don't know how much you know about a TURBT, but it is usually a straightforward procedure in the great scheme of things. Feel free to ask anything and I am sure you will get plenty of support here as you go forward. Best wishes.

    Best wishes to All,   rily.

  • Been in your situation too, had 2 turbts and now waiting to start treatment. This forum is a life line for me, to be able to speak to people that have been through it all, its so helpful. Welcome to the group.

  • Hi Joe324,Welcome to this friendly supportive group.I hope you find it helpful.Best wishes Jane

  • Hi Joe324,

I had a TURBT 1year and 4 months ago. Straightforward operation. That really shouldn't worry you.  As Rily says, bladder cancer can be cured. Treatment and outlook are only clear after the result from the biopsies. Best case 2 weeks after the TURBT. The waiting time is the worst. But once you know what's waiting all will be less stressful. My oncologist told me that if you really have to have cancer, bladder cancer would be his choice...!

  • Thanks for the really encouraging reply, At the moment I'm trying to manage my wife's anxiety as much as anything. The Consultant said I'd be sent for within 14 days for the pre op and turbt. Its close to that and no news so I am trying to re-assure my wife that 3-4 weeks are not critical (hopefully) ..

  • Hi Joe waiting to get things moving and then waiting for results is so stressful for ourselves and our partners but we got to learn to deal with things because this is how it's going to be and getting all worked up about it just causes so much anxiety... I had my first cystoscopy on Dec 14th 2020 where the doctor told me he could see something in fact I could see it too on the camera .. he said I was to have a turbt this was done on Feb 1st 2021 about 7 weeks after cystoscopy..I was in hospital overnight and had a dose of chemo put in bladder after the turbt it was taken out an hour or two after .. I had non muscle invasive cancer diagnosed and have had 15 bcg treatments in my bladder since March 2021 ..thankfully all so far has been clear ..I am due to have my 3monthly cystoscopy soon as they keep an eye on me regularly.. I get anxious before the cystoscopy worried it has returned but I try my very best not to let it take over my life and just get on with things keeping busy ..hope you won't have to  wait too long and all will go well..take care and try your best to keep positive.. so many are on this journey we find ourselves on love Tina

  • Hi Joe. Just to add to Tina's reply. There is still a bit of a catch up situation following Covid, but a few weeks should not make a great deal of difference in the long run. Best wishes.

    Best wishes to All,   rily.

  • Very similar story to mine... if it can help, I don't get worked up or worried too much before the checkup cystoscopies. My tumor (also non invasive) was 3cm in length and my consultant said it could have been there 1.5 up to a couple of years... so in 3 months or 6, even if it comes back it's going to be smaller and easily removed with another TURBT. So far no reoccurrence.  But given that they say BC reoccurs frequently,  I am expecting something sooner or later.  But it really doesn't worry me.

    1. Good luck to you and Joe.
  • Hi, my husband has bladder cancer and I am also the anxious wife! He had a cystoscopy on June 6th which showed “a problem” he was then referred for a cystoscopy with GA which he had on June 29th, this was actually put back a few days because they had an emergency referral, I didn’t realise at the time that this was a TURBT and they removed the growth, it’s all a learning curve. It’s helpful to have this forum as we can learn from other people’s experiences. Jean.

  • Thanks for that x I sometimes think I come across as being very optimistic and upbeat and some may take it the wrong way but what else can we do ?? I also realise that things can change at some time but I will not be sitting at home waiting for it to happen as long as I can go gallivanting I most certainly will lol  best of luck to us all as we deal with things x
