So today I had my appointment for my ct scan to see if I have cancer how far it's spread. Unfortunately when I got there I had an attack of the panics and was unable to go through with it. I feel like I've let myself down, but didn't read the information leaflet & so I didn't know I would have to have an iv iodine solution.
Should I even be this panicky & frightened about allergic reactions? I'm finding this all so hard to deal with ?
Good morning Rachel72 and how are you today? You aren’t the first and won’t be the last to feel anxious about medical procedures . The ct scan is for your benefit and the Injection is to help show up what’s going on . It’s not painful and your likelihood of a reaction is small if at all . The staff will explain what’s happening . Just go for it , best Wishes J
Hi Rachel. Just to echo what Wally says. It can be scary the first time, but really not as bad as you may imagine. The iv is just a needle in the back of the hand. It is very rare for people to have a reaction, and if someone ever does, the staff are well versed on how to deal with it. The injection gives you a warm feeling. Some people don't like it, but I have always felt it a pleasant feeling and it only lasts seconds. Prepare yourself a bit better next time and go for it. The scan itself it totally painless and can even be relaxing. It is usually just a precaution to make sure nothing else is going on elsewhere and give them another part of the jigsaw to give a bigger picture of what is going on. Best wishes.
Hi Rachel,The scan doesn’t take long and most people are fine with the contrast injection. If you have had an allergic reaction before tell the staff beforehand. You don’t have to have the contrast if you are allergic to Iodine. It’s natural to feel panicky but the staff are usually good with anxious patients.Love Jane x
Hi Rachel,Is there anything in particular that is making you anxious ? Some of us here will remember how overwhelming it felt at the start.Everything is new and uncertain. All the conflicting emotions,it is hard. The scans are important in showing what is happening in the bladder.Perhaps it would be possible to have something to make you feel more relaxed before the scan. The staff suggested this for my late mother when she was anxious about a procedure.Do you have supportive people to talk to ? Please don’t feel as if you have let yourself down. You will get through the next scan.Love Jane xx
