Hi to any keen golfers on here. I am awaiting my cystectomy and urostomy in mid January. I am wondering about the impact my changed circumstances will have on my golf?

I am Handicap Secretary for a Golf Society, plus have other golf buddies, so often played 2 or 3 times a week, The medical issues have stopped me playing either due to my physical condition post op and during chemo, plus isolating from Covid. Golf is (was) my main leisure pursuit, so it would be a huge blow, if I found that this was no longer possible. So feedback on your experience would be very welcome, hopefully confirming that I should be able to play with a stoma bag hopefully securely attached to my body.

  • On here Kidneybeen there's no such thing as too much information, at least if there is I haven't seen it yet!

  • Hey KidneyBeen/comeback kid. A bigger comeback than the tiger himself...lol.

9 holes ? That is fantastic. I'm not surprised you are tired. What a good tired though. Not a chemp tired. Not a post operation tired. But a comeback tired.

    Good on you fella.....Del

!4 holes completed today, with the aid of a golf cart. I could have done a bit more, as wasn't feeling to tired. but I decided to be sensible and stop after 5 of the back 9 holes.

I was quite pleased with my effort carding a +2 net score for the par 36 front 9. I was only 7 over par gross score for the extra 5 holes, so almost back to the level when I was playing before the latest surgery.

I will hopefully complete a full round next week using a golf cart, meanwhile a visit to the local range to practice at the w/e will help me to be more consistent. The leg bag extension is working quite well.

I still await delivery of the stoma support belt requested. GP has approved the prescription, but no word about dispatch from the supplier yet, is a bit frustrating.

  • Wow,your recovery is remarkable. At this stage I was still lounging on the sofa watching bad tv.I hope the support belt arrives soon, the last thing you need is a hernia.Best wishes Jane

  • That is fantastic. Getting right back into it. And playing well too ?

Have you had to alter your swing at all ? Or your stance ?

Do keep the updates coming. I'm intrigued and happy for you too.

    All the best....Del.

Thanks Jane and Deloo. Your interest and support gives me great encouragement to strive for improvement on what I can achieve, not that I need much carrot dangling, as have always been that sort of person.

The downside is I beat myself up. if I think I'm failing! Being a very competitive perfectionist can be quite hard to live with, when the reality of not being the best at anything in particular has to be accepted! It must be a lot easier to not be bothered, but we have to try and play the hand we've been dealt.

As regards the golf swing/stance, I've not consiously changed anything, other than maybe not going for 100% power, as worry about putting too much stess on abdominal area, whilst I await the support belt delivery. I have chased the supplier, as not dispatched yet. Apparently they don't keep them in stock. so have had to order from manufacturer, hence delay.

I could have joined some of my golf buddies today for a game, and was quite tempted to do maybe 9 holes. But decided against and went to the local range instead. This was a further step up, as I added my driver to the club selection being used for the first time. Up to now had been mainly using a 6 Iron and 3 Wood for these practice sessions. So quite enjoyed seeing the ball go even further, and mainly straight!

The return to using the golf range has made me realise just how important this practice is for my game. My local (old home) course was closed due to the HS2 construction works. So I lost the very handy range access, that I made good use of at weekends. The new home course being quite a bit further to travel, meant I didn't bother, and my game had definitely suffered as a result.

I have never been a huge hitter, more arm swing than whole body, but am very reliable at hitting it fairly straight down the middle. I hardly ever lose a ball, unlike many I play with, often retiring the ball being used, to use a new one, in the hopes it may just go a bit further!

So 18 holes next week, with driver for most tee shots, is the next challenge.

  • what a comprehensive and interesting reply.

Hitting straight is huge. I tend to normally. Hoever i stopped playing about 3 years ago as i could not get out of the habit of trying to leather the ball. My whole body would tense as i began the down swing toward the ball and my left leg would go stiff and straighten. I'd either top my drive or it would stay low and only go 100 yds. On the rare occasion i was able to relax into my swing and keep my left leg bent/untense the shot would be a beaut. 2 good drives over 18 holes was driving me too mad so i stepped away. Shame because my short game was good and putting not bad.

I may try again after listening to your comeback efforts.

200 yards straight is better than 300 yards and in the deep rough, or water, or sand in my opinion.

Do keep us informed. Your comeback, and road to recovery, is really interesting.

Hmm! - Sunday range visit including using my driver again. I'm finding a little bit of slice creeping in with the Woods, robbing me of some extra yards. So I will have to think what is causing that - perhaps ball to far forward. Meanwhile I can allow for it by aiming slightly left of centre. Sods law I'll then hit it straight!

Completed my first full 18 hole round today after probably about 6 months. Quite tired now, but at least it's a happy tired! Probably helped that it was much cooler today, as a hot day may have been more wearisome.

Didn't score fantastically well, although I was fairly consistent, only blanking one hole in the society Stableford competition. Will start using the driver next time out which may help to shave off a few shots, if I can hit some longer tee shots, particularly on the par 5s and shorter par 4 holes.

  • Excellent.I hope you will have a restful evening now.It is amazing that you are back playing so soon following all your surgery.Jane
