Hi, my Mum has been diagnosed with cancer. It's all through her body. She is in her 80's. Her kidney function isn't great but I have been told she could continue with blood tests to keep an eye on her kidney function.
She has agreed to a stent being fitted but we know very little about this. We have tried ringing the hospital. One says she will be in and out In a day the other says she will be stopping over? So I had a quick look at stents on the Internet.... (I know you shouldn't Google stuff) and they all seem to say they are a temporary thing. As far as we have been told this I being fitted and that's the end of it. When we spoke to the urology department they just said it will all be explained on the day when she goes in. What are other people's experiences? Can anyone shed any light for me?
Hi and welcome to the group, although sorry to hear of Mum's diagnosis. i have no personal experience of kidney stents, so not much help. I only know they are designed to help keep the kidneys drained by bypassing any blockages. I am sure someone with experience will be along to help. Best wishes.
I didn't have stent, but did have an external kidney drain fitted instead of a stent. It was fitted by a radiologist under heavy sedation and I had an overnight stay. Stents are easily fitted and it is not uncommon to be sent home the same day. It often depends on the time of day when the procedure is done.
No I had it removed, but my case was complicated, so I wouldn't use it as an example. I would definitely get in touch with one of the Nurses on this site; they are very knowlegeable and above all; have the time to listen and work in your interests.
I hope things turn out ok and use this site anytime.
