Hi my first post

my husband had blood in his pee.

He went for a hospital appointment by himself and had the camera inserted , he doesn’t retain information well or ask questions, he came home with information that they saw a thumb print sized tumor and booklets talking about cancer and chemo and the turbt procedure ,I was quite shocked by this as we both thought it was going to be a water infection or something. He also bought home 2 consent forms one mentions a biopsy .

He has since been sent for a CT scan almost two weeks ago and received an appointment for the TURBT procedure in 3 weeks .

Ive obviously been googling a lot and it seems to say that most tumors in the bladder are cancerous.

we have not had any results as such or a call from our doctor and we are both very worried.

  • Hi  and welcome to this friendly group although we know you would not rather be here. Firstly, steer clear of google. There is a lot of out of date misinformation out there. We know how worrying the early days of uncertainty and not knowing can be. A TURBT (trans urethral resection of bladder tumour) is a fairly straightforward procedure done under GA. Your husband may be out the same day but prepare for an overnight just in case. Any unusual cells will be scraped away and samples sent for analysis. It takes a few weeks for results to come back. A CT scan is routine procedure just to rule anything else out . If it does turn out to be bladder cancer, then it can be treated successfully. Many here to tell the tale. Lots of experience here so feel free to ask anything. Plenty of support here going forward, Best wishes.

    Best wishes to All,   rily.

  • Hi Pmack.

I was you eight years ago when my wife had a similar experience, one day after her father's funeral.  It's a horrible time and all I could do was fear the worst and to be honest, panic.  Things will move quite qickly but still it will feel like forever and you will have little information to hand but please understand that everyone will be busy arranging things to provide answers as quickly as they can.

A TURBT is another exam, like the camera you mention, done in a way that allows the doctors to take small samples of the area of concern (biopsies) for labaratory examiniation, these will establish whether it is cancerous area or not.  Then they will remove those bits that look like they may be and perhaps put a liquid tretament into the bladder, as a first step.  This usually is very straightforward and most people are home that day or the next.  Sometimes there is discomfort and a little bleeding for a while after and sometimes not, we are all different.

The surgeon will provide some first impressions at this stage but the biopsy report will take a few weeks before a proper diagnosis can be made; this is a difficult time.  Just know that there is lots that can be done and a diagnosis of cancer is not a death sentence, there are several treatments available to deal with whatever may be found.

I was distraught, just as you may be but here we are nearly eight years on and everything is good.  We had a hiccup a few weeks ago after a regular camera exam (cystoscopy) but after another TURBT we are good to go, despite another anxious few weeks while everything was biopsied and reported on.

There will be lots on this site to look at and learn from and I'm sure others will be along soon with better support that I have given.  Try to be positive for now, this isn't the nightmare you think it is and one way or another you will both find a way through it.

My very best wishes to you both.

    Paul

  • Hi Pmack

I remember googling everything and being so scared and confused more than 2 years ago when I was diagnosed (I am now clear and cancer free)

BUT NOW - if I am worried or need to know anything I will ask my questions on here

Everyone is so supportive and there is always someone who can answer your question (usually by personal experience)

We all remember the feeling of being terrified when the word cancer is mentioned, the hours of worrying and waiting for appointments and results (which seems like forever but when I look back it was only a matter of weeks)

Please do not hesitate to ask anything or if you just need support or a virtual hug

Sometimes we don't want to take our worries out on the family for fear of upsetting them

So think of us on this group as an extended family that is a safe space to take out your frustrations and worries

    Much love Tina x

  • Hi Pmack

Just to reinforce what others have wrote I myself was found to have a tumour same scenario seen on flexi camera CT scan two days after booked in for TURBT 3 weeks later and in that 3 weeks no contact apart from phone calls to book in for pre op at this stage of the process there is not much to be said that is concrete until they go in for removal which rest assured isn’t to bad of a procedure and that was 19 months ago now and now being monitered by the hospital all the very best to your Husband hope all goes well for him

  • Thank you for your kind words, I think we just wasn’t expecting it and to be just given leaflets about cancer and chemo it has really shook us , he’s convinced the ct scan is to see if it’s spread and we still don’t know if they actually have already done a biopsy or not

  • Hi Pmack106605,Welcome to our friendly group.I’m sorry that you find yourself here. It’s hard having to wait for tests and the results but try to avoid googling. It will only increase anxiety and you should find that things improve once you have the full picture. If you can find some sort of distraction that will help.We all found this stage difficult so do understand and are here for you and your husband.Best wishes Jane x

  • Thank you for your kind words

  • Hi,What a horrible shock for you both. The biopsies are done under the TURBT procedure. It’s usual to have a scan/scans if they find a tumour. It will give the doctors the information needed along with biopsy results to decide what happens next.It doesn’t necessarily mean spread. It’s done routinely and any later scans will be compared with the first one.I hope this helps.Jane

  • It was … thank you that does help

  • Feel free to ask anything here there is usually someone who can answer
