Rare publicity

We don't often hear about people having bladder cancer, but I came across two in the media today. On R4's The Life Scientific this morning, Dr Gareth Collett (retired army bomb disposal expert, now researching into a possible link between his bladder cancer and bomb disposal) and in the Radio times for next week, comedian Alan Davies reveals his diagnosis. Both caught early and treated.

  • My mum read an article about lorry drivers and some correlation between sitting for prolonged periods and bladder cancer apparently. I'll see if I can find the article she read.

But years of breathing in diesel exhaust fumes also certainly won't help as diesels emit a lot of carcinogens not so much these days with DPF's but in years prior we spent a lot of time in traffic jams breathing all those particulates.

Can't find the article she read tbh.

  • Hi T. Interesting stuff. It may be the chemicals involved in bomb disposal is the link. We know that even though BC is one of the most common cancers, few people have heard of it. Publicity like this can make more people aware and hopefully recognise symptoms earlier. best wishes.

    Best wishes to All,   rily.

  • I guess it all depends, I didn't notice any symptoms particularly just a frank hematuria and was like oh crap that's not good. I hadn't even really noticed I was peeing more than usual etc.

  • Interesting,I’m sure there was a bomb disposal expert who used to post here a while ago.It is a pity that bladder cancer doesn’t get more publicity.I asked Macmillan whether they could include difficulty in passing urine/urinary retention onto the list of symptoms of bladder cancer. It was not being able to pass urine easily that was my main symptom and I knew of others where that was the only symptom.I hardly found any mention of it on bladder cancer symptom lists,I suppose because it’s rarer than passing blood.Jane

  • I suppose it's like most things we see on here, there seems to be no universal symptoms that are always present for many even with very similar situations aka amount and type etc of tumours.

I don't think it helps as a lot of people don't really understand what cancer is, it's any normal cell that grows abnormally and divides uncontrollably. Any of the cells in our bodies can become cancerous at any time from being previously healthy cells.

That's why some people who love hery unhealthy lifestyles don't ever get cancer and some who live very healthily do.

The same with all the potential cases of cancer they certainly add the risk of causing cancerous cells but it also doesn't mean that cells will suddenly become cancerous. Same with smoking I know plenty that smoke like chimneys and don't get cancer, of course plenty that do, do her cancer.

It's a lottery and not a good one that's fur sure. But more chance of "winning" the bloody prize than winning the big jackpot on the real lottery sadly.

  • I guess smoking and passive smoking may have been another link - especially Alan Davies and comedy clubs, and in military camps off duty, pre-smoking ban. Certainly smoking was blamed for my mother's case and probably mine, possibly more passive than actual (plus any inherited tendency).

Now there seems to be the fentanyl aspect too.

It would be good if people were more aware of what to look out for. Blood in urine was my first and only clue.

Certainly have never approached a bomb nor driven a lorry. Have sat in a lot of traffic jams though.

    All the best,
