Bladder Cancer

My husband has been looking forward to an appointment with the Oncologist Specialist next Tuesday to find out if his radio therapy treatment has worked.

He has just received letter from the Clinical Administration Unit advising him that the appointment had been  cancelled - no apology or reason why.  He is absolutely devastated as am I.  He was given two telephone numbers but you cannot speak to anyone  - just leave a message.  The same with our Macmillan cancer nurse who is never available and doesn't ring  back.  She was very attentive at the beginning and my husband rarely gets in touch with her even though he is struggling and feels so poorly.

Not only did he want to know the outcome of the treatment he wanted to discuss the tablets he is on which are causing unpleasant side effects.  He has been through so much and is on his 10th antibiotic treatment since February with having so many infections.

He feels completely abandoned and useless.

  • Sadly appointments sometimes end being rescheduled, things do happen that means there isn't many options other than to cancel it.

But if it was really important usually they would try not to cancel it. Keep on calling and asking for updates and when the next appointment will be.

They will prioritize the most urgent cases for follow ups when shift staffed etc usually, so at the moment try and take it as good news they don't need to discuss things with you that urgently possibly.

I hope the treatment has worked for you both as that will take a load off your mind undoubtedly.

So fingers crossed for some good news when you get the appointment again.

  • Thank you for your reply.  Unfortunately they are not aware of the importance as my husband has been unable to speak to anyone for several weeks.

    Thank you for good wishes.

  • Hi FloGlow,I’m sorry to hear this.
Have you tried e mailing ? I have found this usually gets a response. If there is not an e mail address on the hospital letter there should be one online for your hospital.I got a phone call from a consultant after I had e mailed concerns.Keep on at the hospital, your husband needs to be seen/contacted.Best wishes Jane

  • Hi Floglow, I reckon it would be worth contacting PALs (Patient Advice and liaison Service) at your hospital and telling them of the problems your husband is having and the lack of support you both feel. This would include the issue of oncologist cancelling this appointment, the lack of follow up calls from the CNS, your husband's side effects from treatment. !0 lots of antibiotics since February sounds really worrying. I have heard PALs can be very helpful in smoothing the way through the system. Sending you both a hug. Hx

  • Thank you for your reply and your advice.

My husband left a message with PALs and spoke to a very nice lady from Cancer Care who was very helpful  and caring.  He explained the problems he was having with some tablets he is taking and she confirmed that it would be alright for him to stop taking them.

He is still waiting to hear from the other telephone messages he left but he feels brighter now that he can stop taking the tablets that he believes are making him feel so poorly.  Time will tell if it is the tablets.

Thank you again for your kindness.

  • Thank you so much for kind reply.   My husband has left a message with PALS and has spoken to a very kind and caring lady from Cancer Care who has confirmed that it is ok to stop the tablets that he thinks is making him feel so poorly.

He kis still waiting to hear from he messages he left with others but they are probably inundated with similar messages.

Thank you again for your kind response.
