Blood from the Stoma

I am getting traces of bright red blood on the wet wipe when cleaning the stoma during a bag change. It isn't a lot, although today was quite a bit more than seen before. Is this something to worry about, or is it "normal"?

  • Hi kidneybeen

I’ve had this on occasion if I’ve been a little over enthusiastic with cleaning, or nicked it with a fingernail although literally just a spot on occasion. If you have quite a bit of blood and it’s frequent, I’d be getting that checked out as it shouldn’t be bleeding.

  • Hi ,

The Stoma - or "spout" as my Stoma Nurse used to call it  - has a lot of blood vessels and is easily made to bleed slightly if not very careful with cleaning, however these usually stop within seconds. Obviously profuse , continual bleeding would need investigating.

  • The blood isn't coming out of the "spout" or in the urine. It's just when I wipe it clean with the thin cloths supplied by Charter. I dip these in warm water and try and gently wipe all round the spout and surrounding skin. Perhaps the warm water is opening pores on the surface, which causes some localised bleeding. It doesn't amount to much and stops as soon as I have stopped disturbing the area.

  • Hi KidneyBeen

Stomas are little bleeders that's for sure. They are sensitive little souls. Basil has a little bleed now and then bless him. It is normal
