I am 80 yrs old and considering nephrostomy tubes for both kidneys with BCG treatment one day a week for six weeks.  Some of the terms on this site seem alien.  I would also like to get some guidance on how to use the site.

  • Hi Quakerlake, glad you have found your way to our friendly group. I hope someone will soon pop up to share their experience of nephrostomy tubes. I did not experience these but after my bladder cancer diagnosis in 2017, I had the full BCG protocol. One of the benefits of the treatment is that over regular visits to the urology department I got considerable support and guidance from a team of fantastic nurses. In particular my CNS (Clinical Nurse Specialist) has been a real friend to me. I am 75 and BCG has given me the opportunity to continue to live a happy independent life. Sending you best wishes H.

  • I had a tube inserted into one kidney which was blocked by my tumour. The tube was only in for 2 weeks, but the tube & bag were easy to manage. A district nurse came in to change the dressing every few days. The insertion procedure scared the willys out of me but it didn't really hurt as such. I had it done under a local aneasthetic. It saved my kidney. Management is emptying the bags & keeping the dressings clean. I had a waterproof dressing to be able to take a shower.

  • Hi Quakerlake, just to add my welcome to the group. My husband has not had to have nephrostomy tubes so I can't help on that. But if you say what terms you don't really understand, I will be happy to try and explain them if I can.
