Bladder irritation

Hello all, just asking anyone out there who is suffering from bladder irritation or cystitis as a result of BCG treatment and what they have been recommended in treatment. I have had months now of pain/frequency of passing urine. I spoke to my urology nurse last week and she put me on a low dose of Amitryptiline (10mg). I'm contacting the nurse today about upping the dosage. It's not a quick fix pain killer and takes a few weeks to kick in. I have read several posts on people suffering from cystitis and the majority give it the thumbs up. Also is there anyone on Tamsulosin for their prostate? If so is that effective? Even the nurse is questioning whether it is actually my bladder that's causing the problem and possibly my slightly enlarged prostate. I would welcome any feedback on drugs that they have found to be helpful. This forum is so useful in getting feedback particularly in being in touch with people who have experience in such matters. Thank you all for listening.

  • Hi . This is a fairly common problem on here. Different medications work for different people, but over the years many nurses have recommended regular cranberry juice, and of course, lots of water. Best wishes.

    Best wishes to All,   rily.

  • I must admit I drink water like there's no tomorrow, so always peeing through day and night. I've read different conflicting reports about cranberry juice, not tried it so perhaps I'll give it a try. I'm getting to the point where I will try anything that helps.

    Thank you rily for replying.

  • Cranberries are good for preventing bacteria adhering to the bladder wall.If your urine is too acidic you may find Cranberries too sharp. When I had Interstitial cystitis I found pear juice was the most soothing drink.I get one made by Granini,Tesco and Waitrose are the places I’ve seen it.It isn’t cheap but sometimes it’s on offer. They do a peach and also an apricot which are nice too. Some people find Cranberry tablets more useful than in juice form.Best wishes Jane

  • Thanks Jane, I'll try pear juice, have done lemon barley water. I have just spoken to my urology nurse and I have now doubled up my Amitriptyline dosage to 20mg so keeping fingers crossed that will make some difference over time. I have a cystoscopy on May 12 which no doubt will show the current state of my bladder and then go from there. Also due to see a doctor at some point after that, becomes very wearing as no doubt you can appreciate.

    Thanks Chris

  • Hi Chris,I hope the Amitriptyline is helpful.I keep forgetting to start mine. It’s been prescribed to help with the pain from spinal cord compression. Not too long to wait for your cystoscopy. It’s never easy waiting for procedures or results.Best wishes Jane

  • Thanks Jane, I used to be on Amitriptyline for my neuropathy after my chemo but didn't stay on it too long. I'm not a great lover of taking drugs, I know needs must. There are so many options on the table but we never know which will work for us. All a bit trial and error. Take care Chris

  • Hi Jacaranda07 I take 10mg Amitryptiline at night for neuropathic pain in my feet, which for some inexplicable reason only hurts when I'm lying in bed.  It helps me sleep and there don't seem to be side effects caused by long term use. Hope it will help with your BCG cystitis. H x

  • Thank you Herothedog for your response. I'm hoping it will be a double whammy for my neuropathy as well. I feel as though I walk on sponges on the soles of my feet. It doesn't cause me pain just something I live with. Take care.
