When to stop BCG treatment?

Hi all

just a quick question?
I have now had 2 years worth of BCG treatment and had my last flexi on Tuesday. I have been diagnosed with BCG cystitis which has been extremely painful for last 6 months or so. Who decides when you can stop the BCG? I cannot do another year with sort of pain all day and night. I am only 53 years of age and still work full time, and it is affecting my work.

Any advice or shared experiences would be extremely helpful at this stage.

  • Hi  and welcome to the group, although sorry to hear you are suffering with cystitis brought on with BCG. Although not had it myself, it comes up fairly regularly on here. I believe it is a personal choice whether to continue or stop the treatment and rely on regular check ups. I am sure someone will be along with ideas on helping. Best wishes.

    Best wishes to All,   rily.

  • Hello Trayliner, sorry to hear you've had such a rotten time with BCG, I hope at least it has done it's job stopping a cancer reoccurrence? I had the full 27 doses because during the treatment I kept getting small low grade reoccurrences, BUT my team asked me when I got to 18 doses if I would prefer to stop because of latest research implying less doses reduced the damage of the treatment. I have been pretty  fortunate with my reaction to the doses although at my last flexi I was shocked to see I did have a lot of inflammation. Anyway no further reoccurrences in past year. From what I have read I believe stopping after 15 doses is considered ok. Sending best wishes Hx

  • Thank you that’s good to hear… Trying to speak to the Urologist is near on possible as I only see them at my flexi and each time it’s someone different..

  • Hello trayliner, I had a total of 14 and the oncology nurse who realised it was causing me aggro through cystitis stopped it. Not sure how many people complete the full 3 years of instillations. Everybody is different so obviously some tolerate it more than others.
