That was me this morning awaiting my surgery, then 4 hours later - Sorry Mr X , but we have had to cancel, as there isn't a bed available in the Intensive Care Unit. I'm really gutted, although I haven't actually had any more bits cut out yet!

It's rather ironic, as the procedure had been brought forward a day, which was great, one less day to wait - wrong, now they are promising me next Tuesday, as a top priority for the resources required. But after today, I fear best intentions could still be thwarted!

Whilst hugely disappointed, after having psyched myself up for the impending ordeal, I actually found myself feeling sorry for the surgical team. They had tried all morning to resolve the problem without success, and then had to come and deliver the bad news to me. I think they were almost as upset about it a I was. I'd seen all the team members, who were all there for me, who presumably had a wasted morning as nothing for them to use their specialist skills on. Such a shame.

  • I’m really sorry to hear this.Fingers crossed it goes ahead next week. When I arrived for my op the patient before me on the list had suffered complications. That didn’t calm my nerves much but I did get to theatre 7 hours later.I felt sorry for the team too, they were rushing about trying to find beds and that was pre-Covid.Best wishes Jane

  • Ohh KidneyBeen. What a bummer. Really feel for you after all the prep. I hope all goes well for you next Tuesday. Best wishes.

    Best wishes to All,   rily.

  • Drat! My heart goes out to you KidneyBeen, totally understand all the build up you went through to get yourself mentally ready. So unfair to be left flat and waiting. Deep breaths and fingers crossed for Tuesday, I bet the team will be particularly keen when they can use their skills to help you. Sending you love. xxx

  • Thanks to you all for your responses. I hope no one else has to experience a last minute cancellation. Next Tuesday has been confirmed now, so yesterday was just an undress rehearsal!

Main worry now is the next swab test on Saturday. My youngest sons 2 children have both now tested +ve for covid, So no prizes for guessing who kindly drove us to the hospital. He had a negative flow test beforehand, so hopefully not going to be a problem, but obviously a potential banana skin.

  • Update on the covid situation, both my son and his wife have returned negative test results for the last 2 days, so looks like that isn't an issue anymore. I won't be leaving home now, apart from the drive thru swab test, until the next trip to the hospital.

  • Fingers crossed that the surgery goes ahead as planned.Best wishes Jane

  • Well that went pretty well on the whole. Operation carried out last Tuesday morning. GA and epidural, which they kept going several days afterwards. So have made a very good recovery, and persuaded the medics that I was well enough to come home, which is where I am now! Still quite tender around the op site, hardly surprising. Also bloated, as not got great bowel action going just yet. Eating and drinking very well, feeling quite tired, although have slept quite well, so I suppose it's going to be slow going from here to get back to 100% level.

    1. Hi,It is good to hear you are through the surgery and recovering.I found the bloating took a while to go down.Great that you are eating and drinking well.I was nil by mouth virtually the whole time in hospital so I built up slowly at home.Take it gently and listen to your body.If I did too much I would get pain and nausea. It is easy to overdo it on days when you feel better.Best wishes Jane
  • Post Op day 11 - Feeling a lot brighter today. Day 3 of antibiotics course, so that is helping, as is taking stronger pain relief, Co-codamol instead of paracetamol. Still quite tender around the operation wound sites, and a bit bloated still, although taking Movicol is helping to get things going better. District Nurse came yesterday to change wound dressings, no obvious sign of infection, so it must be internal. Racked up 3 different follow up appointments now. One for removal of stent from stoma, one with District Stoma nurse team for check up, and then one with the surgeon to discuss operation outcome and future follow ups.

  • Hi Bob,I had the stents out after 2 weeks if I remember correctly. It was quick and I didn’t find it too painful.I travelled to the local hospital for the stoma check up.Best wishes Jane x
