Poor Basil

Hi all

I hope this finds you well

Basil is feeling sore and sorry for himself.  The skin surrounding him is white and sore. My stoma nurse said it's a buildup from the spray.

I tried to wipe it off by spraying said spray on a dry cloth as instructed but it did no good and Basil was not amused, it made him sore

Any suggestions on helping Basil back to his usual happy self would be much appreciated

Love Inanna x

  • Hello Inanna, ouch....sore skin is miserable. Sending love. x I don't have stoma experience but I do easily get really sore skin. Reading your post made me realise that my hands feel chapped from being outdoors in today's cold damp. I can use a hand cream to soothe, is this possible for Basil? x

  • Hi H, great to hear from you.

It seems quite logical to use handcream but I'm not sure. Will do some researching

  • Hi Inanna, just as with the Covid and other infectious illnesses, always check with a pharmacist if it is Ok to take sustained release vitamin C, as this should help the sore skin to heal. Other possibly helpful nutrients are fish oils, these help build good cell walls for new cells eg skin. Lavender oil well diluted in a carrier oil is good for burn and scald recovery because it helps new skin cells replace scars. I know that works well from my days using a soldering iron all shift. So another possibility to check out, though obviously oil is not going to help adhesive fittings.

Hope you can find the right things to improve Basil's wellbeing,

  • Hi Denby

Thank you for your response. I will be speaking to my stoma nurse and the supplier of Basil's paraphernalia.

I hope you and yours are well

  • I hope the stoma nurses can help.Love Jane x

  • Poor you & poor Basil. Not an expert, but is it worth checking the size of hole you need now? When I had stents in a bag & even the smallest standard hole was too large, the skin got very sore (as you describe) from contact with urine. Hope you get it sorted soon.

  • Thank you Jane and I so hope you are in less pain today or no pain, even better

  • Hi Teasswell

    Hope you are well

I think the hole size is ok as it still fits

I managed to scrape some skin off (oh dear,  so nice not) but I cannot remove all of it as it is very sore. Will chat to Stoma nurse. Poor old Basil
