Hi guys just popped in to say, I hadca call from the hospital today to say they had a cancellation for tomorrow so scheduled turbit is tomorrow, what should I expect going forward to recovery, and roughly how long is the operation, sorry and how long before people were able to drive agai many thanks

  • A TURBT is often just a day at the hospital, but it's best to take an overnight bag with you in case they keep you in a bit longer. Sometimes you may be discharged with a catheter and bag fitted. Normally this will only be in place for about a week. Driving should be possible as soon as you feel comfortable at the wheel of your vehicle. Just avoid anything strenuous for 14 days or so. Your medical team will give further guidance on the recovery period.

  • Hi  . Good to know you have an appointment tomorrow. No time to worry about it. Most cases are done in day surgery but prepare for an overnight in case you go down late. The procedure itself takes up to an hour and you will not know anything about it. You will wake up in recovery and then moved to a ward where you may be offered tea and toast which is wonderful. You may or may not be given any feedback before going home. Recovery depends on how much they have to remove but you should feel ok after a few days. It is not advised to drive for at least a week even though you may feel ok to drive as any sudden movement like emergency braking could aggravate the wound. I'm sure others will be along to add. I hope all goes well. Best wishes.

    Best wishes to All,   rily.

  • 24 hours before you can drive after a GA or even sedation if you feel well enough once the effects have properly worn off.

They will also need someone to come and collect them from the ward to be released as well obviously.

  • At my hospital you are in for the day usually either early morning or midday depending on the scheduling. You will go in and be admitted and all the usual stuff, seeing anaesthetist and consultant and nurses dealing with you.

You will then go to surgery if everything is running on time in the order on the list they have, sometimes they may change the order of when people go.

As said you will need to take it easy not lifting or exerting yourself for a week or so but can depend on how much and how deep they have to resect.

Ask the nurses about recovery time on the ward and explain your job, My first one I was given a 4 week sicknote because I'm a HGV driver.

Someone will need to drop you off and also come up to the ward to collect you when you are released. They will want to make sure you can pee freely if no catheter before releasing you and make sure you have come round enough from the GA.

But as said take an overnight bag, sometimes if things run late you might not go to theatre that day, But usually are in and out in a day.

You will be given pain meds and will have stinging when urinating, the following day or so when all the meds you were on you may also get a sharp stabbing pain in the side when urinating I did for 5 or 6 days and it was agonizing so don't suffer in pain ask for help, I was given something to help with bladder spasms the second time when I complained about how much it hurt the first time.

You may experience some of this or none of this, each hospital varies somehwat how they do things and also not everyone has the same levels of pain or complications either.

Usually the surgery is around an hour but can be longer as well.

  • Afternoon forncett. Not always mentioned but don’t be surprised if you have blood clots and debris when you pee, this is all part of the process and can go on for a week or two after TURBT, best wishes for tomorrow
