Hi
I was wondering if anyone has been in this situation and wouldn’t mind sharing their experience .
My mum (67) has non muscle invasive high grade bladder cancer , she has had 1 TURBT then her 6 weeks initial BCG treatments .
currently at the end of her 3 month break and scan shows more cancer than before , the cancer specialist nurse has said it still appears to be non muscle invasive but she won’t know for sure until after a biopsy . Mum has her 2nd TURBT Booked for next week.
has anyone had experience with this situation … how did it turn out and what further treatment was offered , is it likely to just keep coming back as fast ?
thank you for your help
I was in this state after the first series of BCG at the lower dosage level. I agreed with hthe consultant to for a further series withe the strongest dose level to beat up the cancer. This worked. I have been tested for the last ten years by cystoscopic examination, and have now been cancer free for 12 years. Just had my 89th birthday... Best wishes for the follow-on treatment.
Thank you so much for your reply. It really is good to hear you have had successful treatment and have been healthy and cancer free for so long. Your reply has made me feel like there is still so much that can be done for my mum , it’s always a blow when you get a scan result that is not positive news .
Many Happy Returns for your recent birthday
Hi Glad to have been of help. I was able to watch the scans via my own monitor so able to see the original cancers being removed and watch most of the scheduled scans and could see that all was well. Not often to get to watch the experts at work.
Wow , that is quite amazing ! It is wonderful what they can do these days .
Hi, I opted for surgery to avoid this scenario. My understanding is that it will depend very much on the new biopsy. If lower grade, further BCG or another type of immunotherapy may be worthwhile. If still higher garde, especially if any hint of progression, they may suggest more aggressive treatment. In any case it is your Mum's decision and no-one can predict how well any individual will do. This is always the dilemma with high grade BC. The more often it comes back, the higher the risk that it will progress. Hope all goes well for your Mum.
Following on from here …
yesterday mum went in for her TURBT and they didn’t do as much as they intended because the dr said the Cancer was more extensive and they have sent for biopsies . She was told that more major surgery could be needed or / and an updated treatment plan . That’s the only info they gave my mum . Now I feel like we are just letting to wait whilst the cancer is continuing to grow and possibly spread . It’s so frustrating , we just seem to get bad news after bad news . My dad had treatment and surgery for lung cancer last year and now my mums been facing her bladder cancer diagnosis this year , living in constant anxiety is definitely taking its toll on us all
sorry to sound like I’m having a rant … some days the waiting for answers is a lot to deal with
Sorry to hear this.It is horribly stressful waiting for results.Once they are back you will all know more and it will be easier mentally. Most people find they feel better emotionally once the treatment plan is in place. We all understand the anxiety.Love Jane x
