Hi,

So my wife went for a cystoscopy 6 weeks ago where they found a 2cm tumour, she had a CT scan and was then scheduled for a TURBT which she had on the 28th July, she had complications in the operation and nearly cut through the bladder wall and was sent home with a catheter for 10 days. The results came back as a Grade 2 pTa NMIBC. I wanted to reach out on here to anybody currently going through this whether you have just been diagnosed, waiting for results, post op etc to try and answer any questions you may have about the process and maybe give some peace of mind where possible. I spent days and days searching forums and googling things for peace of mind and looking for people in the same situation and know first hand the relief you get when you read the right word and the dread when you read the wrong word. Im no professional or expert but happy to answer anything I can about the experience, good luck

  • Hi  and welcome to this friendly and supportive group. Sorry to hear your wife had complications during her TURBT. Thankfully, this is not common. I hope she is doing well now. Good to know you are prepared to help anyone else going through this. We know how the early days of of uncertainty and not knowing can be. Lots of varying experiences here . Best wishes.

    Best wishes to All,   rily.

  • Hi Chase,

Welcome to this friendly forum, although sorry to hear about the complication your wife had during her TURBT.

    Hope she is feeling better.

    Take care.

  • Hi Chase

Welcome to the group and hope you and your wife find it helpful I had exactly the same diagnosis as your wife 18 months ago tumour exact same size as well wow has it really been that long already I had a second TURBT after the first as they wanted to do a deeper biopsy which thankfully returned as a benign result so which indicated they seem to have got all the tumour on the first one I have then been  put onto follow up surveillance which last two Cystocopy,s have also been clear so far so good but unfortunately have got a lot more to have done in the coming months and years but glad they are keeping an eye on me it’s for the best to be sure

  • Plenty of here have been through similar like myself. July 24 1cm tumour resected and stent fitted which caused untold pain for me.

Jan 25 small recurrence washed away.

June 25 several more recurrences resected and now going to have 6 chemo sessions shortly to try and minimise the risk of recurrences further. Mitomycin done once a week directly into the bladder.

That is all in the space of just about a year.

Not to mention various scans and ultrasound and blood test etc.

Things will get better and at times things will get worse, it's just a journey you have to take the highs and lows together.

The waiting for results and not knowing is the hardest part, non muscle invasive is obviously better than muscle invasive. But plenty get through this and have clear checks as well.

Good luck and any question is not a daft question so ask anything you can think of and someone will give you advice.

  • Hi Guys,

Looking for abit of reassurance if possible. So as said above my wife had the TURBT and had the tumour removed 3 weeks ago today. She had a catheter in for 10 days. Her results was discussed with a consultant being a Grade 2 pta superficial tumour size 2cm. She is still having bits of blood in her wee, very frequent urination and lower back pain 3 weeks after the operation, is this normal? Thanks very much!

  • Those symptoms could well signal a UTI so worth checking with GP in case antibiotics are needed. With G2pTa, quite possible that follow up will simply be regular cystoscopies and removal of any recurrences. They may recommend immunotherapy (BCG into the bladder) to deter recurrences. Best wishes.

  • Hi,

Thanks for the reply, she did a urine sample on monday and there wasnt any sign of a UTI so we have just been left wondering if its just recovery?

  • I had bloody urine for 6 or 7 weeks after my first TURBT. On and off. I was told it can be very normal to have prolonged periods of bleeding when I queried it.

Mine was a 1cm tumour so smaller than your wife's, but again depends how much they had to respect to get rid of it and possibly even location as well.

But I did have a stent fitted too as it was obstructing the orifice of my ureter of my left kidney in my case. After a while I did get worried about how bloody my wee's were but was told constantly it is pretty normal. And it doesn't really take that much blood to turn your urine dark red either.

I was told black or brown is usually something to be concerned about. Also some debris is normal like clots etc to pass.

But if you are unsure get things checked out by your docs or the hospital staff.

But for me it did eventually clear up.

My recent TURBT not much blood persisting at all with several smaller recurrences removed.

  • Could be, especially as the bladder wall was somewhat damaged & needs time to heal. There's also the factor that we are far more aware of anything out of the ordinary when in this position.

  • Hi Chase

Sorry to read your wife is still having issues and also that this is causing you to worry obviously there could be a couple of Reason why your wife is still having blood appear as others have said a UTI could be the cause but also as you said there was some damage to the bladder during the TURBT which would extend the healing time which people would experience after a straight forward TURBT maybe a phone call to the specialist nurse or the urology team maybe a good idea just piece of mind and see what they suggest

    all the best
