I suffer from radiation cystitis of the bladder, sometimes when I’m about to are after a bowel movement I get extreme bladder cramping. I also have a in dwelling catheter This often passes after about 10 seconds but it can be intense. I take Oxybutynin, but to be honest it doesn’t seem to be very effective. I’ve heard drugs like Amitriptyline can sometimes be very effective. I just wondered if anyone has any other recommendations that might help me. Thanks

  • Hello  . Not experienced this myself, but just let me welcome you to the group. Cystitis is something that comes up here often. Hopefully someone with experience of cystitis will be along with some advice. Best wishes.

    Best wishes to All,   rily.

  • Hi  I've had bladder cystitis following radiotherapy for prostate cancer for over 3 months. I've only recently started taking Oxybutynin. I take 250mg once a day. Things I've read suggest that it can take up to 4 weeks to take effect. It seems to have taken less time for me.

I also have an indwelling catheter, and when my course of Prednisolone ended, my bladder spasms became more frequent, more intense and with more leakage past the catheter. Oxybutynin seems to be helping, especially at night.

If you stick with it, I hope you see a similar improvement. Good luck with your recovery.

  • I should add that I am being treated for prostate cancer, and a sitewide search for Oxybutynin led me here. I felt I should say something, but I'm happy to leave this forum if I'm talking out of turn.

  • I think it could be useful for you and also mainly for the male members of this forum, so stay with us if you are happy to keep track of two or more forums. I'm 76 and have had long term Foley urethral catheters continuously since late 2018. My prostate quite often makes catheter replacement a tricky procedure for the medics. I have only had bladder cramps once. Extremely unpleasant !  Mine was relieved by A&E deflating the retention balloon, pushing the catheter further in, reflating the balloon then very gently reseating it. All except one of my catheters have had a 10ml retention balloon and the majority have been 16CH. The exception was a curved tip catheter which had a 30ml retention balloon. It was diabolically uncomfortable, often painful, for about 6 weeks. At that point I gave in, asked A&E to replace it with a standard catheter. I have not had any medication to suppress spasms or shrink my prostate.    Ray
