Hi all

My husband had a TURBT and a biopsy was taken of a large tumour, we went and saw the surgeon two weeks ago and were informed that this was muscle invasive bladder cancer  and the CT scan showed there appear to be some anomalies so he has been and had a PET scan now and it's been confirmed the cancer has spread into the lymph nodes but confined to the pelvis area. We are now waiting for a treatment plan we see the consultant on Thursday this week and really what I want to know is this timeline of several weeks normal and as it's spread how quickly can it spread further ?

We are quite positive but cannot find much online about how quick everything happens, any help would be appreciated

  • Hi  and welcome to the group although sorry to hear your husband has bladder cancer. Bladder cancer can be treated successfully and many here have been through it. It is always a worry that things can be spreading, but several weeks wait is fairly normal. Once you see the consultant this week you will have a clearer idea of what they are dealing with and what the plan is. When a treatment plan is in place there is then something positive to focus on. Best wishes.

    Best wishes to All,   rily.

  • Thank you Rily I was sure this was probably normal but I have had no experience with cancer so it's great to be on here

  • Hi Rachybadger,Welcome to our friendly group.A few weeks wait is normal.I was diagnosed in July 2019,saw the surgeon in August and had surgery the following month and was classed as urgent.I hope you find the group helpful and supportive. There is wealth of experience on here so feel free to ask anything.Best wishes Jane x

  • Thank you feeling better now about the wait

  • Hi Rachybadger, Try not to worry to much, mine was also urgent for cystoprostatectomy surgery which I gather he will be offered with spread to lymph nodes as they remove them, from consultant to surgery I was told within a month, and my surgery was done within that timeline, probably the only thing that met the right timeline though apart from GP to consultant, I hope all goes well for him and stay positive.

    Best wishes Dave

  • Hi Rachybadger,

From experience I guess the pace and prospective treatment options depend on a couple of things as well as your husband's diagnosis:

The outcome of a Multidisciplinary meeting where all the medics, including senior cancer nurse specialists, radiographers etc discuss all the current cases  and plan what to do and when, and

How busy your hospital is and how many patients need treatment and how quickly.

I was talking to my CNS the other day who told me they are seeing many more patients these days who are often younger than average. This is a busy London hospital receiving complex cases from other hospitals.

So it's hard to say what timescales are generally. But I'm sure that as soon as you see the consultant things will be clearer and your husband'll have any number of appointments with medics - I had so many that my daughter created a big sheet with them all colour- coded (I had muscle-invasive but no lymph nodes - so as well as Urology surgeons there were oncologists, prehabilitation specialists - physios- liver tests, CT scans, blood tests etc, etc)

From diagnosis via chemo etc took 4.5 months and never a dull moment. I'm doing fine - nearly 3 years after the TURBT.

    All the best,
