Hi folks, those of you that have had a RC, have any of you had recurring or chronic UTIs after surgery.what treatment did you have, and has it worked for you?
I was hospitalised withUTIs in December 24, Feb 25 and March 25. Recently I had another, but no hospitalisation required. I am now on prophylactic TMP. I tried Hipprex but had to give it up, as it caused gout flares. I am now on Allopurinol which seems to be working.
cheers
Leo
Hi Leo. that really sounds miserable for you. I can't help, but just wishing things get better for you with the new meds. Best wishes.
Sorry you're having problems. I haven't had any UTIs since the op but I have followed a strict regime of drinking 2+ ltrs of water daily, plus morning black teas and a latte, washing my hands before touching the bag spout and, recently, making sure to wash the nightbag with soapy water every morning.
I have no idea if all that is helping to keep infection away but I hope it is. Your symptoms sound very uncomfortable and I hope they get on top of it soon.
All the best,

After my RC I was recalled to hospital for a urethrectomy because biopsies showed cancer cells at the margins of my urethra. Pre operative checks for this further operation revealed I had a UTI. I had no symptoms whatsoever and therefore no Idea how long the infection had been around. A year on all checks have been clear and no further UTI’s
The only thing I can say is that after discussing with my stoma nurse I’m now very careful with handwashing when handling/changing bags and alway give night bags a good wash through with warm soapy water each morning. I also have a small daily glass of cranberry juice that I read has good effect at keeping UTI’s at bay.
Hi Leo
Sorry to hear this isn’t resolving. I had a Radical Cystectomy last September (similar time as yourself). I was on a great upward recovery trajectory until around 3 months in when I started to suffer with recurrent UTI’s. GP visits (interestingly the urine testing strips will always give an abnormal result due to the new plumbing) led to 3 courses of antibiotics (which helped for a couple of days, but then symptoms recurred) & a referral back to my consultant.
A CT scan revealed a stricture (blockage) in my left ureter to be causing the recurrent infections. We learned this was most likely due to inflammation and scarring & was causing recurrent kidney infections. (My other ureter is going to be monitored as this is only slightly restricted.) I had a nephrostomy at hospital and a stent put into the ureter at the same time. Basically a catheter-type tube that runs from my left kidney out to my stoma into my Urostomy bag. This tube requires exchanging every 3 months @ BRi - had first exchange performed already & no infections since February!
I’m sure you’ve already had a CT scan to rule this out, but just thought I would mention it.
Best wishes
Gareth
Hi Gareth, thanks for the info. Yes I have had CT scans, a loopogram, etc no problems with the plumbing. I do have a hernia - which my nurse tell me is very likely causing UTIs . Hoping to getting it addressed soon.
